Human gut microbiome: A primer for the clinician

Saurabh Kedia et al.

Summary: The human microbiome, consisting of genetically and phenotypically distinct microbial species, has a profound influence on the human host. The gut, in particular, is a densely populated and well-characterized site for these microorganisms. Microbiome science has made significant advancements in both technical and biological aspects, shedding light on its role in health and disease. Clinicians conducting microbiome studies should be aware of the factors that can affect research outcomes, both in terms of technology and biology. Therefore, this review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the determinants of the human gut microbiome in a healthy state.

Ginsenosides repair UVB-induced skin barrier damage in BALB/c hairless mice and HaCaT keratinocytes

Zhenzhuo Li et al.

Summary: This study reveals the potential of ginsenosides (GS) in preventing skin photoaging by protecting the skin barrier. The researchers identified the main monomeric constituents of GS and found that GS protects the skin barrier by inhibiting the MAPK signaling pathway, as shown in experiments on hairless mice and HaCaT cells.

Gut-Brain-Skin Axis in Psoriasis: A Review

Guang Chen et al.

Summary: Psoriasis is a common skin disease characterized by chronic inflammation and complex etiology. Research suggests that the gut microbiota may act as a bridge between the immune and nervous systems, impacting the regulation of neurotransmitters. Studies indicate that manipulating neurotransmitter levels by bacteria could potentially influence host physiology.

Skin lipids in health and disease: A review

Sophie Knox et al.

Summary: Our skin serves as a flexible barrier and plays important roles in protection, immunity, regulation, and sensation. Skin lipids are crucial for maintaining skin structure and function, with various types of lipids playing key roles. Research on skin lipids, including changes in composition related to skin diseases, will pave the way for advancements in diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of skin disorders.

Fecal and Duodenal Microbiota in Pediatric Celiac Disease

Diyora Abdukhakimova et al.

Summary: This study aimed to summarize the main characteristics of the gut microbiota in pediatric CD. The authors conducted a systematic review and found no specific celiac signature in the fecal and/or duodenal microbiota of CD children. However, certain components of the fecal microbiota, such as Bifidobacterium spp., may warrant further research for their potential value in probiotic therapy and diagnostic/prognostic biomarkers.
