The gut microbiome and allergic rhinitis; refocusing on the role of probiotics as a treatment option

Jianghua Li et al.

Summary: Research suggests that changes in commensal microbiome are associated with the development of allergic diseases such as asthma and allergic rhinitis. The use of probiotics for treating allergic rhinitis may alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life. However, further studies with more participants are needed to confirm their effectiveness.

The Gut-Brain Axis

Emeran A. Mayer et al.

Summary: Preclinical evidence has shown bidirectional interactions among the brain, gut, and gut microbiome, with candidate signaling molecules and three communication channels. Alterations in gut-brain-microbiome interactions have been found in various disorders, but the causative role of the microbiome in irritable bowel syndrome is still unclear. Current therapies are limited to dietary interventions and targeted pharmacological and behavioral approaches. Further research and randomized controlled trials are needed for effective therapies.

Summary: The study found that more than half of formula-fed infants consumed probiotic-enriched formula at 2 months, while only 1 in 10 consumed prebiotic-enriched formula. Associations between the consumption of probiotic-enriched formula and risk of respiratory symptoms differ according to the strain considered and consumption period, suggesting the need for further well-designed studies to confirm these results.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Local Allergic Rhinitis

Tetsuya Terada et al.

Summary: Local allergic rhinitis (LAR) is a unique form of chronic rhinitis that is neither classical allergic rhinitis (AR) nor non-AR. LAR is often underdiagnosed and affects children and adults worldwide. It shares many features with AR, including positive nasal allergen provocation test (NAPT) and presence of type 2 inflammatory markers.

Summary: This study investigated the role of probiotics and prebiotics in regulating immune responses in asthma. The results showed that treatment with probiotics and prebiotics could alleviate acute airway inflammation, reduce levels of immunoglobulins and leukotrienes, and improve lung histopathological features. They also modulated the expression of multiple genes involved in immune responses.

Summary: This study investigated the antioxidant effect and mechanism of probiotics Pediococcus pentosaceus (PP) on Parkinson's disease (PD) by regulating the gut-brain axis. The results showed that PP treatment improved motor deficits, the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons, and the accumulation of alpha-synuclein in PD model mice. PP treatment also improved gut microbial dysbiosis and increased the level of GABA in PD model mice.
