Physiological drought resistance mechanisms in wild species vs. rootstocks of almond and plum

Hadas Gerbi et al.

Summary: The study found that wild almond trees have higher drought resistance compared to rootstock, while wild plum species do not. Additionally, the research results indicate a link between drought resistance in wild tree species and their native habitat conditions.

Hydraulic failure and tree mortality: from correlation to causation

Marylou Mantova et al.

Summary: Xylem hydraulic failure is a major factor in drought-induced tree mortality, but the mechanistic link between hydraulic failure, living cell damage, and tree death is still unknown. This Opinion article focuses on the importance of meristematic cells in tree recovery from drought and their connection to membrane integrity.

In situ, direct observation of seasonal embolism dynamics in Aleppo pine trees growing on the dry edge of their distribution

Yael Wagner et al.

Summary: Research on Aleppo pine trees in a dry Mediterranean forest has found that embolism, which impairs hydraulic conductivity, occurs during the dry season and is more likely to happen during daytime hours. The probability of embolism increases with higher vapor pressure deficit.

Drought resilience of conifer species is driven by leaf lifespan but not by hydraulic traits

Yanjun Song et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the hydraulic and carbon traits of conifer species and their influence on growth strategies and drought resilience. The research measured 43 functional stem and leaf traits for 28 conifer species in a 50-year-old experiment. Two trait spectra were identified, and it was found that leaf lifespan is a key factor in growth recovery after drought.

Lack of hydraulic recovery as a cause of post-drought foliage reduction and canopy decline in European beech

Matthias Arend et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of the 2018 European drought on beech trees and found that the hydraulic conductance of the trees was lost during the drought and did not recover in the following year. The decline in hydraulic function was associated with defoliation symptoms and a decrease in wood starch concentration. The findings suggest that leaf development after drought acclimates to mitigate disturbances in canopy hydraulic function.

Productivity versus drought adaptation in olive leaves: Comparison of water relations in a modern versus a traditional cultivar

Oded Barzilai et al.

Summary: This study compared the water relations of two olive cultivars and found that the traditional drought-adapted cultivar Souri had lower leaf hydraulic conductivity but higher osmotic content and cell rigidity compared to the modern highly productive cultivar Barnea. Souri was able to sustain lower stem water potential and maintain optimal photochemical potential, while Barnea had higher productivity but quicker depletion of water content. The results suggest that the tradeoff between productivity and drought adaptation in olive leaves is not solely determined by hydraulic resistance or the ability to sustain low water content.

Radial variations in xylem sap flux in a temperate red pine plantation forest

Alanna V. Bodo et al.

Summary: The study found that most of the water transport in red pine trees occurs in the outermost sapwood, and neglecting radial variations in sap flux density within trees can lead to an overestimation of transpiration, causing uncertainties in water budgets. This research will help improve understanding of water use dynamics in temperate pine forest ecosystems and aid in protecting these forests in the face of climate change.

Container volume affects drought experiments in grapevines: Insights on xylem anatomy and time of dehydration

Jose Carlos Herrera et al.

Summary: Plant stress experiments are commonly conducted in containers to control environmental conditions, but the container volume can affect plant growth and development. In drought experiments with grapevines, plants in different container sizes showed differences in physiological responses, highlighting the importance of considering container volume in experimental design for unbiased results.

Leaf Shedding and Non-Stomatal Limitations of Photosynthesis Mitigate Hydraulic Conductance Losses in Scots Pine Saplings During Severe Drought Stress

Daniel Nadal-Sala et al.

Summary: During severe drought stress, trees reduce water loss by closing stomata, resulting in limitations to photosynthesis. Other mechanisms, such as non-stomatal limitations (NSL) of photosynthesis and premature leaf shedding, also contribute to stress mitigation. Combining these factors can improve tree hydraulic simulation models and reduce conductance loss.
