Turbulence-driven magnetic reconnection and the magnetic correlation length: Observations from Magnetospheric Multiscale in Earth's magnetosheath

J. E. Stawarz et al.

Summary: This study examines the influence of magnetic correlation length on turbulence-driven reconnection using observations from the MMS mission. The results show that electron-only reconnection is more prevalent for shorter magnetic correlation lengths, leading to faster electron jet speeds and thinner current sheets.

Solar Wind Magnetic Field Correlation Length: Correlation Functions versus Cross-field Displacement Diffusivity Test

B. R. Ragot

Summary: The estimation of the solar wind magnetic fields' parallel correlation length has shown discrepancies between the results from correlation functions and the CFD diffusivity test, but these differences can be reconciled through detailed analysis. The correlation lengths of the fields and MFL range from 0.03 to 0.3 au with peaks at 0.075 and 0.15 au, indicating nonlinear and quasilinear regimes of MFL wandering. The power-at-zero-frequency approach is affected by solar rotation and is therefore deemed ineffective.

Strong reconnection electric fields in shock-driven turbulence

N. Bessho et al.

Summary: Turbulent magnetic reconnection in a quasi-parallel shock under parameters relevant to the Earth's bow shock is investigated. The study shows the generation of current sheets in the shock transition region, where electron-only reconnection or reconnection involving both ions and electrons can occur. The outflow speeds of electrons and ions can reach high values, resulting in a larger reconnection electric field compared to standard reconnection processes.

A Database of MMS Bow Shock Crossings Compiled Using Machine Learning

A. Lalti et al.

Summary: This article introduces a machine learning approach to automatically identify collisionless shock crossings in data sent from spacecraft. A database of shock crossings with various parameters was compiled, and the study reveals the wide spatial and parameter distribution of these shock crossings. A scientific application is also presented by exploring correlations between ion acceleration efficiency and different shock parameters.

Comparative Analysis of the Various Generalized Ohm's Law Terms in Magnetosheath Turbulence as Observed by Magnetospheric Multiscale

J. E. Stawarz et al.

Summary: Decomposing the electric field into the contributions from generalized Ohm's law provides key insight into both nonlinear and dissipative dynamics in plasma. Observational analysis from the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission shows that magnetohydrodynamic, Hall, and electron pressure terms are the dominant contributions to the electric field, and nonlinear contributions play the dominant role in shaping the field.

Two-dimensional Particle-in-cell Simulation of Magnetic Reconnection in the Downstream of a Quasi-perpendicular Shock

Quanming Lu et al.

Summary: In this study, magnetic reconnection in the downstream of a quasi-perpendicular shock was investigated through simulation. The reformation of the shock front led to the formation of multiple current sheets, resulting in electron-scale magnetic reconnection and the generation of magnetic islands.
