Assessment of computational method for highly subcooled flow boiling in a horizontal channel with one-sided heating and improvement of bubble dispersion

Jeongmin Lee et al.

Summary: This study investigates the local hydrodynamic and heat transfer characteristics of subcooled horizontal flow boiling. The study shows that body force significantly affects the predicted results, leading to asymmetric distribution of fluid velocity and temperature along the channel. The shear-lift force has a greater impact on the dynamic behavior of small bubbles and heat transfer. Including the bubble collision dispersion force improves the agreement between simulation and experimental results.

The bubble breakup process and behavior in T-type microchannels

Zheng Zhang et al.

Summary: The bubble breakup process in a double T-type microchannel was simulated using a volume of fluid model via numerical simulation. The simulation results show five different breakup regimes, including non-breakup, tunnel breakup, obstructed breakup, merging symmetric breakup, and merging non-breakup. The study reveals that at high gas velocity and small bubble size, the bubble does not break up, while symmetric breakup regimes can be divided into tunnel breakup and obstructed breakup. The merging symmetrical breakup regime involves both tunnel breakup and obstructed breakup processes.

Bubble growth and departure behavior in subcooled flow boiling regime

Nikhil Chitnavis et al.

Summary: The study investigates the bubble growth rate and departure mechanism in subcooled flow boiling conditions. An energy balance model is used to estimate the bubble growth rate, taking into account components such as microlayer evaporation, conduction, and condensation heat transfer. A force balance model predicts the bubble departure diameter and type. The models are validated against experimental data and a flow regime map is developed to identify bubble departure characteristics.

Experiments to understand microlayer and dry patch dynamics under subcooled nucleate flow boiling in a vertically oriented rectangular channel

Mohd Moiz et al.

Summary: Nucleate flow boiling is an effective heat transfer mode with high heat transfer rates. This study focuses on the influence of subcooling on the dynamics of dry patches and microlayers during nucleate flow boiling. Flow boiling experiments were conducted on a hydrophilic surface with water as the working fluid. The experiments revealed that increasing subcooling level leads to a decrease in the size of dry patches and the radial spread of microlayers.

Numerical investigation of critical heat flux during subcooled flow boiling in a vertical rectangular Mini-channel

Yu-Jie Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, the VOSET method is used to investigate the critical heat flux (CHF) of subcooled flow boiling in a vertical rectangular mini-channel. The relationship between boiling crisis and dry patch is demonstrated, and a new triggering mechanism is proposed. The results show that the appearance of an almost permanent dry patch with high local wall superheating is caused by the continuous coalescence of elongated bubbles midstream and downstream.

Summary: A three-dimensional conjugated numerical simulation is conducted using the interface capturing method to investigate subcooled flow boiling in a horizontal rectangular mini-channel. The simulation successfully captures hundreds of bubbles with different sizes and reproduces the typical processes and flow boiling patterns. The effects of heat flux and vapor fraction on heat transfer coefficient are discussed, and the heat transfer mechanisms of subcooled flow boiling at different heat flux in the present mini-channel are explored.

Summary: A numerical study on two-phase flow boiling in raccoon and straight microchannels is conducted, showing the presence of flow boiling instability and the impact of bubble dynamics on the process. Analysis of Eotvos and Weber numbers is used to study bubble behavior and shape, and the influence of different parameters such as waviness and mass flux on bubble flow patterns is investigated. The study also observes the effect of forces on bubble coalescence under varying waviness and mass flux conditions.

Two-phase heat transfer correlations in three-dimensional hierarchical tube

Wei Li

Summary: Developing novel enhanced surface tubes is an important approach to improve two-phase flow heat transfer. However, accurately predicting the heat transfer correlations in enhanced tubes has been a challenging task. This paper presents a method to directly develop two-phase heat transfer correlations in enhanced tubes based on existing smooth tube models, by introducing modifying factors and dimensionless numbers. The method is supported by theoretical analysis and experimental studies, and new correlations are successfully developed in an enhanced heat transfer tube as an example.
