Near Field Evolution of Blade Wakes Under the Influence of Upstream Transitional Flow in a Compressor Cascade at Moderate Reynolds Numbers

Lei Shi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the instantaneous flow fields near the blade and wake region of a compressor cascade at various incidences using particle image velocimetry. The results show that laminar separation occurs at an incidence angle of 5 degrees, and the separation vortices lose coherence at high incidence angles. The evolution, decay, and flow fluctuations of the wake are directly correlated with the laminar separation bubble type.

Vortex dynamics and associated turbulence production in the separated transitional flow and the wake at a moderate Reynolds number

Lei Shi et al.

Summary: The vortex dynamics in the separated transitional flow and the near-wake over a C4 compressor blade were experimentally investigated. The interaction of laminar separation vortex and trailing edge vortex was captured using time-resolved particle image velocimetry. The contributions to turbulence production from various flow dynamics were separated based on the orthonormality of velocity components' proper orthogonal decomposition modes.

Wavelet analysis of the flow field around an oscillating airfoil undergoing pure pitching motion at low Reynolds number

Kamran Ghamkhar et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the flow field around a NACA 0012 airfoil undergoing pure pitching motion using continuous wavelet transform. Wind tunnel experiments were performed with a test-stand that provides a wide range of oscillation frequencies (f = 0-10 Hz). The results indicate that the maximum value of the lift coefficient decreases by increasing the reduced frequency due to the apparent mass effects.

A proper orthogonal decomposition analysis upon aerodynamic structures under clean and rough conditions

Ingrid Quiroga et al.

Summary: This study examines the sensitivity of laminar separation bubbles to surface roughness on aerodynamic geometries such as airfoils. The analysis of surface-pressure datasets using the POD technique reveals the position of the separation bubbles and captures the turbulence transition location. The findings suggest that the POD analysis can be used to determine the reattachment position or transition point in the presence of a laminar separation bubble.

Flow control mechanism of compressor cascade: A new leading-edge tubercles profiling method based on sine and attenuation function

Jiezhong Dong et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a new method of leading-edge tubercles profiling based on sine and attenuation functions, which can effectively improve the stall margin in a compressor. The research shows that uniform tubercles with small amplitude and large wavelength can delay stall incidence from 7.9 degrees to 8.8 degrees and increase it by 10% compared to the baseline. Introducing suitable attenuation functions can further delay stall incidence to 9.7 degrees and increase it by 21.25% compared with the baseline. Analysis of the vorticity transport equation and three-dimensional streamline reveals the factors related to the formation and development of leading-edge vortex pairs.

Flow instability and momentum exchange in separation control by a synthetic jet

Yoshiaki Abe et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of a synthetic jet (SJ) for controlling separated flows around an airfoil. Large-eddy simulation (LES) was performed to analyze the flow characteristics and the effect of different actuation frequencies on the flow control. The results show that an optimal actuation-frequency band between F+ = 6.0 and 20 suppresses separation and significantly improves the lift-to-drag ratio by generating a coherent vortex structure that enhances the turbulent component of the Reynolds stress.

Numerical investigation of aerodynamic characteristics of a flying wing aircraft controlled by reverse dual synthetic jets

Zhijie Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, the control potential of reverse dual synthetic jets (RDSJs) in a flying wing aircraft (FWA) is investigated using numerical simulations. The results show that the aerodynamic loads follow a nonlinear trend and can be divided into three stages with an increasing angle of attack (AOA). In the first stage, the RDSJs improve the reverse pressure gradients and form alternate recirculation zones. In the second stage, the energy of the RDSJs is too low to form a strong disturbance over the leeward surface. In the third stage, the RDSJs interact with the larger separation and accelerate the flow, improving the strength and stability of the leading-edge vortex (LEV).

Low Reynolds Number Effects on the Separation and Wake of a Compressor Blade

Qiang Liu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the surface boundary layer and wake development of a compressor blade at a range of low Reynolds number. The results show that large laminar separation bubbles exist on both blade surfaces and as Reynolds number increases, these separation bubbles shorten in length and reduce in thickness, leading to a narrower wake. However, the trailing edge separation is largely independent of Reynolds number, leading to a constant peak loss coefficient. Overall, the research provides new insights into the connection between the blade surface flow field and the wake characteristics at low Reynolds number.

Structure and dynamics of a laminar separation bubble near a wing root: towards reconstructing the complete LSB topology on a finite wing

Connor E. Toppings et al.

Summary: The influence of the wing root junction on the laminar separation bubble forming on the suction surface of a semispan NACA 0018 wing is studied using surface flow visualizations, particle image velocimetry, and surface pressure measurements. The study reveals that the wing root region exhibits substantial three-dimensionality in the separation bubble flowfield, with earlier transition and a reduction in separation bubble thickness. In contrast, the wing tip region shows earlier transition and a reduction in separation bubble length. The results also indicate that the increased level of perturbations near the wing root leads to earlier vortex roll-up and more rapid vortex breakdown due to the spanwise flow.

The nonlinear lift coefficient characteristics and active flow control of a symmetrical airfoil at a low Reynolds number

Tianyu Xia et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the flow characteristics of a symmetrical airfoil at Re=40000 and 0 degrees angle of attack numerically. The study reveals the presence of nonlinear lift coefficient phenomenon and different types of laminar separation bubble (LSB) structures. It is found that the nonlinear characteristics of the lift coefficient originate from the differently shaped pressure distributions in the LSB. The causes of the different characteristics of the pressure distributions in different types of LSB are further revealed by deriving the Reynolds-averaged pressure gradient equation. An active flow control method based on local oscillation is adopted to suppress the disadvantages associated with the nonlinear lift coefficient of a symmetrical airfoil.

Laminar Separation Bubble Development on a Finite Wing

Connor E. Toppings et al.

Summary: This experimental study compares the development of a laminar separation bubble on a finite wing with that on a two-dimensional airfoil. The results show significant differences between the two configurations regarding the position of the separation bubble and the characteristics of the shear layer. The spanwise features of the bubble on the wing are well approximated by those obtained on the airfoil at the angle of attack matching the effective angle of the wing root.
