Performance analysis of low Reynolds number vertical axis wind turbines using low-fidelity and mid-fidelity methods and wind conditions in the city of Nottingham

Shubham Shubham et al.

Summary: The aerodynamics of small-scale Darrieus vertical axis wind turbines (VAWT) is investigated using two analytical methods and wind resource assessments in Nottingham, UK. The study compares the results of different design parameters and shows overall agreement between the methods, except for extreme solidity cases. The flow field is visualized to study the VAWT wake and understand the complex interactions.

Secondary flows in the wake of a vertical axis wind turbine of solidity 0.5 working at a tip speed ratio of 2.2

Antonio Posa

Summary: The study found that the end effects at the tip of the blades of a vertical axis wind turbine cause significant secondary flows, especially on the windward side. They lead to additional lateral displacement of the momentum deficit from the leeward side towards the windward side, increasing turbulence levels and reinforcing the asymmetry of the wake system.

Solidity effects on the performance of vertical-axis wind turbines

Mark A. Miller et al.

Summary: The development of universal scaling relationships for basic performance parameters of vertical-axis wind turbines has been difficult due to the variety of configurations available. In this study, experiments were conducted on a VAWT model using a specialized compressed-air wind tunnel to explore the effect of solidity on performance. The results showed that for the three highest solidity rotors, performance was similarly dependent on the Reynolds number, despite changes in rotational effects.
