Evaluation of Fay and Riddell formula under hypersonic flight conditions

Sanghoon Lee et al.

Summary: The Fay and Riddell (F-R) formula, widely used for estimating the stagnation-point heat flux on noncatalytic and fully catalytic surfaces, was found to underestimate noncatalytic heat flux due to the chemical composition at the surface. However, for fully catalytic heat flux, the F-R formula provides similar results to thermochemical nonequilibrium calculations, but overestimates the diffusive heat flux. Comparison with flight experimental data showed that the F-R formula overestimated the fully catalytic heat flux with an error of up to 50%.

Slip and jump coefficients for general gas-surface interactions according to the moment method

Ruo Li et al.

Summary: We present a moment method based on the Hermite series of arbitrary order for calculating the coefficients of viscous-slip, thermal-slip, and temperature-jump in gas-surface scattering. By assuming certain characteristics of the scattering kernels, we prove the solvability by demonstrating the positive definiteness of the coefficient matrix in the boundary conditions. The proposed method accurately captures the slip and jump coefficients for gas flows with Cercignani-Lampis gas-surface interaction and inverse-power-law intermolecular potentials using elegant analytic expressions. The method is flexible, allowing for increasing accuracy with higher order moments, and provides simpler and more accurate formulas for low-order situations compared to existing results in references. Applying these formulas can improve the accuracy of macroscopic fluid dynamic models for gas flows.

Interaction of dissociated air with the surface of ?-cristobalite material

A. A. Kroupnov et al.

Summary: A closed kinetic model is developed to study the interaction between dissociated air and the surface of SiO2 (beta-cristobalite) heat-shielding material. The surface of the crystal structure material is modeled using a cluster approach, which captures the stoichiometry and valence states. The potential energy surface is calculated using the electron density functional theory (DFT) method, and the rate constants of various elementary stages are obtained using transition state theory.

Unsteady behavior and thermochemical non equilibrium effects in hypersonic double-wedge flows

Davide Ninni et al.

Summary: The paper presents highly detailed two-dimensional numerical simulations of hypersonic nitrogen and air flows around a double wedge, focusing on the unsteady behavior and thermo-chemical non-equilibrium effects. The results show that the occurrence of unsteady periodic behavior depends on the flow conditions and is inhibited in the high enthalpy case. Furthermore, discrepancies between the results obtained with different thermo-physical models are observed in the case of high enthalpy flows.

Boundary Conditions for Fluid-Dynamic Parameters of a Single-Component Gas Flow with Vibrational Deactivation on a Solid Wall

L. A. Shakurova et al.

Summary: The boundary conditions for a strongly nonequilibrium single-component rarefied gas flow in the slip regime are obtained using the methods of kinetic theory. The study considers the slow relaxation process of vibrational energy exchange and the gas-solid surface interaction. The obtained boundary conditions depend on various coefficients and transport coefficients.

On the influence of non equilibrium in the free stream conditions of high enthalpy oxygen flows around a double-cone

Davide Ninni et al.

Summary: This work presents a detailed analysis of the shock wave/boundary layer interaction in hypersonic flows around a double-cone. Numerical simulations have been carried out to investigate the effects of thermochemical non-equilibrium and surface processes. The study highlights the importance of accurately evaluating the free stream conditions for predicting separation extent and heat transfer in high enthalpy conditions.

State-specific boundary conditions for nonequilibrium gas flows in slip regime

L. Shakurova et al.

Summary: Boundary conditions for fluid-dynamic variables of strongly nonequilibrium multicomponent gas mixture flows in slip regime are systematically derived by two different approaches. The kinetic boundary condition method provides a more rigorous mathematical description of the problem and can be easily generalized for other scattering kernels and gas-surface interaction models.

Summary: This study used solvers with varying model fidelity to model the high-temperature relaxation of air and the hypersonic flow over a cylinder. The results showed that uncertainties in vibrational relaxation times and reaction rate constants had a significant impact on thermal and chemical relaxation, particularly on gas temperature and species mole fractions.

Kinetic theory of chemical reactions on crystal surfaces

Kazuo Aoki et al.

Summary: A kinetic theory describing chemical reactions on crystal surfaces is introduced, involving physisorbed-gas particles and chemisorbed particles interacting with fixed potentials and colliding with phonons. The equations for physisorbed-gas and chemisorbed species are coupled with those describing crystal atoms on the surface. Fluid boundary conditions are derived using a fluid scaling and Chapman-Enskog method, involving complex surface chemistry and multicomponent diffusion.

Summary: Three continuum models based on the generalized Chapman-Enskog method are developed to model shock wave structure in carbon dioxide. The study compares simulations for Mach numbers 3-7 using these models with other approaches, highlighting the impact of bulk viscosity and Prandtl number on fluid-dynamic variables and heat flux. The study emphasizes the importance of considering multiple vibrational relaxation mechanisms and evaluating contributions of different energy modes to the total heat flux.
