Aeroacoustic control mechanism on near-wall-wing of Aero-train based on plasma jet

Chenguang Lai et al.

Summary: This study investigates the aeroacoustic control mechanism of a plasma jet on a high-speed moving wing under a wing-in-ground effect. The results show that different plasma excitation modes interfere with the vortex generation and development in different ways to achieve aeroacoustic reduction. The modal analysis reveals that the change in each order of the modal corresponds to the energy decrease at the peak frequency and the energy increase at high frequencies.

Unsteady Structure of Compressor Tip Leakage Flows

Joshua M. Maynard et al.

Summary: Direct numerical simulations (DNS) were used to investigate the unsteady and turbulent flow structure within compressor tip flows of a cantilevered stator blade. Simulations with clearances of 1.6% and 3.2% of chord were conducted, revealing highly unsteady phenomena controlled by fine-scale turbulent structures. The presence of the classical tip-leakage vortex was found to be a consequence of time-averaging and did not exist in the true unsteady flow. The effects of blade tip corner radius and Reynolds number on the unsteady flow were studied using a validated quasi-three-dimensional (Q3D) model, showing significant variations in tip mass flow and dissipation within the tip gap.

Validation and verification of RANS solvers for TUDa-GLR-OpenStage transonic axial compressor

Xiao He et al.

Summary: This paper presents a comprehensive validation and verification study of turbomachinery Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes flow solvers on the transonic axial compressor TUDa-GLR-OpenStage. The effects of grid density, turbulence models, and rotor-stator interface models on compressor performance and flow field predictions are investigated. The results and discussions provide a useful reference for future RANS simulations for compressors.

Pressure and velocity fluctuations characteristics of the tip clearance flow in an axial compressor stage at the near-stall condition

Quanyong Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, the pressure and velocity fluctuations characteristics of the tip clearance flow in the rotor and stator of an axial compressor were investigated using large eddy simulation (LES) under near stall conditions. The research focused on the spatiotemporal evolution of complex flow structures, pressure and velocity fluctuations, the probability density function (PDF) of velocity and pressure fluctuations, and the space-time correlations of these fluctuations. The findings showed that the motion of leakage vortex is related to the blade channel passage, the amplitude of frequency on the suction surface is higher than that on the pressure surface, and the space-time correlation for pressure fluctuation is mainly concentrated in the separated flow.

Analysis of tip leakage flow unsteadiness in a transonic turbine cascade using data-driven modal decomposition methods

Yi Yang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel approach using data-driven methods to characterize the unsteady dynamics of turbine tip flow. By analyzing hybrid Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes/large eddy simulation data, the identified eigen-tuples and their differences are determined. Large-scale fluctuating structures and small-scale vortical interactions are decomposed and analyzed.

Study of Unforced Unsteadiness in Centrifugal Pump at Partial Flow Rates

Jun Yang et al.

Summary: The study discovered unforced unsteadiness in centrifugal pumps under partial flow conditions, with an unstable flow structure near the throat area at a fundamental frequency of 0.23. As flow rates decreased, the unsteady flow structure weakened and disappeared, revealing two additional unforced unsteady flow structures at 0.6 times the design flow rate with characteristic frequencies of 0.0714 and 0.12.

Tip leakage flow, tip aerodynamic loading and rotating instability in a subsonic high-speed axial flow compressor rotor

Zhiyang Chen et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the flow mechanism of rotating instability in a subsonic axial flow compressor rotor through experiments and simulations. It is found that rotating instability occurs at a narrow stable operating range, and the frequency of rotating instability decreases with the decrease of mass flow rate. The stronger tip leakage vortex and induced vortex near the pressure surface side of the neighboring blade lead to the oscillation of tip leakage flow and tip aerodynamic loading, resulting in rotating instability propagation.

Intermittent breakdown of the tip leakage vortex and the resultant flow unsteadiness in the tip-region of a subsonic compressor cascade

Bo Wang et al.

Summary: A numerical investigation on the unsteady phenomenon of tip leakage vortex breakdown in axial-flow compressor rotors has revealed that the intermittent breakdown is triggered by a feedback mechanism, where the formation of induced vortex or backflow vortex induces pressure variations affecting the TLV. This study also shows that the amplitude and frequency characteristics of the unsteadiness associated with the breakdown differ depending on whether the backflow vortex or the induced vortex is dominant.
