Unsteady flow past slotted circular cylinders in laminar regime: Effect of slit shapes and Reynolds number

Bishwajit Sharma et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigated the flow around a slotted circular cylinder in an incompressible and unsteady regime. The results showed that three different-shaped slits effectively suppressed the shedding of vortices, and the injection of momentum reduced the shedding strength and frequency. The slotted cylinders exhibited improved pressure recovery, decreased pressure drag, and lower total drag coefficient.

Numerical investigation of flow past a circular cylinder modified with a single groove at low Reynolds number

Ashutosh Priyadarsan et al.

Summary: Flow past a circular cylinder modified by grooves is an effective technique for reducing drag and lift forces. This study numerically investigated the influence of a single groove modification on a circular cylinder at low Reynolds numbers. The results showed that square grooves at a position of 90 degrees resulted in the maximum reduction in drag and lift.

Dynamic kirigami structures for wake flow control behind a circular cylinder

Xin Wen et al.

Summary: Kirigami structures are used for the first time to achieve dynamic passive flow control by activating and deactivating an array of tilted surface elements on a bluff body. The control performance is validated in a wind tunnel, showing that activated kirigami structures can push the shedding vortices downstream and reduce turbulent intensity and Reynolds shear stress. The performance depends largely on the height and shape of the kirigami structures.

A comprehensive numerical study on flow-induced vibrations with various groove structures: Suppression or enhancing energy scavenging

Junlei Wang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effects of symmetrically installed groove structures with different shapes on flow-induced vibration (FIV) under high Reynolds numbers. The study uses numerical simulation to analyze the dynamic responses of cylinders with various groove shapes and installation angles. The results show that different groove shapes and angles have significant impact on the amplitude and working bandwidth of the oscillations.

Numerical study of cross-flow around a circular cylinder with differently shaped span-wise surface grooves at low Reynolds number

Farhana Afroz et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigated the laminar cross-flow over circular cylinders with smooth and grooved surfaces, focusing on the influence of different groove shapes on the flow dynamics. The results showed that properly designed longitudinal grooves can significantly reduce the drag and lift force on the cylinder, as well as delay separation and reduce the size of the recirculation zone.

Non-Newtonian fluid flow over a rotating elliptic cylinder in laminar flow regime

Deepak Kumar et al.

Summary: In this paper, a numerical investigation is conducted to understand the flow behavior of power-law fluids past a rotating elliptic cylinder in unconfined domain. The study examines the influence of various parameters, such as rotational speed, power-law index, aspect ratio, and Reynolds number, on the flow characteristics. The results demonstrate a strong dependency of the flow phenomenon on these parameters.

Prediction of drag components on rough surfaces using effective models

Sahaj Jain et al.

Summary: Due to the challenges in accurately predicting interface velocities and computing drag components on rough surfaces, an effective model, called the Transpiration-Resistance model, has been developed. This model introduces shear and pressure correction factors as constitutive parameters to accurately predict interface velocities and partition the total drag into viscous and pressure components.

An efficient explicit jump high-order compact immersed interface approach for transient incompressible viscous flows

Raghav Singhal et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel hybrid explicit jump immersed interface approach in conjunction with a higher-order compact scheme was proposed for simulating transient complex flows governed by the streamfunction-vorticity (psi-zeta) formulation of the Navier-Stokes (N-S) equations for incompressible viscous flows. The approach demonstrated superior performance by reducing errors and decaying faster compared to existing methods. It efficiently handled various fluid flow problems, including those involving multiple and moving bodies. The accuracy and robustness of the approach were exemplified by the close agreement between computed solutions and existing numerical and experimental results.

Numerical investigations on the flow control over bumped surface circular cylinders

Javad Farrokhi Derakhshandeh et al.

Summary: This study investigates external flow-induced forces on circular cylinders with bumped surfaces in laminar flow regimes, revealing that the presence of bumps significantly alters vortex dynamics and reduces drag and lift coefficients. Among the square, triangular, and dimpled surfaced cylinders examined, the square bumped surface exhibits the strongest negative vorticity when theta = 90 degrees compared to the others. Additionally, maximum lift coefficient is achieved when the bump is located at theta >= 45 degrees, while minimum drag force occurs at theta = 0 degrees and Re = 150.

Thermo-fluids effects of a grooved circular cylinder in laminar flow regimes

Javad Farrokhi Derakhhsandeh et al.

Summary: This study investigated the force coefficients and heat transfer of a circular cylinder with grooved surfaces at low Reynolds numbers. The results showed that the presence of grooves significantly influenced the dynamic behavior of vortices, leading to variations in lift and drag coefficients. Among the different groove shapes and angles, the triangular grooved surface at 45 degrees showed the lowest drag coefficient and enhanced heat transfer in the wake.
