From snapshots to manifolds - a tale of shear flows

E. Farzamnik et al.

Summary: We propose a novel nonlinear manifold learning method using Isomap as encoder and K-nearest neighbours algorithm as decoder, and demonstrate its superiority over POD for shedding-dominated shear flows. The method is applied to numerical and experimental datasets including fluidic pinball, swirling jet and wake behind tandem cylinders, and is able to describe the bifurcation, chaotic regime and shedding phases of the flow. The reconstruction error of the manifold model is small, indicating that the low embedding dimensions contain the coherent structure dynamics.

Cluster-based control for net drag reduction of the fluidic pinball

Xin Wang et al.

Summary: We propose a Cluster-Based Control (CBC) strategy for model-free feedback drag reduction with multiple actuators and full-state feedback. CBC consists of clustering the input, interpolating the feedback law, and optimizing the actuation commands. This strategy shows distinct advantages for robustness control at different flow conditions and reveals the evolution of control flow associated with the centroids.

Large eddy simulation of flow around two side-by-side circular cylinders at Reynolds number 3900

Cheng Zeng et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the flow dynamics around two circular cylinders in a side-by-side arrangement with different spacing ratios under a subcritical Reynolds number condition. A three-dimensional numerical model was developed with Large Eddy Simulation technique and validated against published data. The results reveal different wake regimes and shed light on the influence of spacing ratios and Reynolds numbers on the wake characteristics of the cylinder pair.

Numerical simulation of flow-induced vibration of a circular cylinder close to a free surface at low Reynolds number

Xiang Qi et al.

Summary: The study investigates the flow-induced vibration of a two-degree-of-freedom cylinder near a free surface at a low Reynolds number (Re = 200) using the lattice Boltzmann method and a free-surface model. The effects of the Froude number and submergence depth on the flow field and cylinder vibration characteristics are discussed. The interaction between the wake behind the cylinder and the free surface leads to a change in vortex shedding mode and fluctuation of the free surface, which in turn affects the cylinder's vibration. Decreasing the normalized submergence depth h* results in a decrease in transverse amplitude and an increase in streamwise amplitude of vibration.

Three-dimensional flow past two stationary side-by-side circular cylinders

Weilin Chen et al.

Summary: The study conducted three-dimensional direct numerical simulations of flow past two stationary circular cylinders and identified five distinct flow regimes based on cylinder diameter, Reynolds number, and center-to-center spacing ratio. The intrinsic features of each flow regime were elucidated using various analysis techniques. The study also discussed the effects of three-dimensional vortical structures on hydrodynamic forces and flow behaviors, as well as the influence of cylinder length on the switching behavior of gap flow.

Asymmetric wake, origin, generation, and suppression behind asymmetrically pitching hydrofoil

Zaka Muhammad et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigates the wakes generated by symmetrically and quasi-symmetrically pitching hydrofoils. The timing of vortex shedding and convection velocity of vortices in the wake are found to be crucial factors determining the asymmetric wake formation. The inability of the shear-layer rolling up with the pitching motion results in an uneven temporal separation between vortices, leading to the formation of vortex dipoles and the asymmetry of the wake. By manipulating the timing of vortex shedding and the shear-layer roll-up, the wake can be transformed from asymmetric to symmetric and vice versa. The analysis of different types of pitching hydrofoils reveals the relationship between timing and spatial separation with wake deflection.

Bistabilities in two parallel Karman wakes

Chengjiao Ren et al.

Summary: Bistabilities of two equilibrium states in coupled side-by-side Karman wakes were investigated through Floquet analysis and DNS. Two bistabilities were found in transitional regions from in-phase to anti-phase states. The transition between states was found to be dependent on initial conditions, with one state being irreversible and the other reversible. Additionally, it was observed that the flow characteristics were affected by the presence of cluster-scale features and instability to flip-flop flow.

On wake modulation and interaction features of a pair of dual-step circular cylinders in side-by-side arrangements

Yuhao Yan et al.

Summary: Through three-dimensional direct numerical simulations, this study investigates the flow characteristics of dual-step circular cylinders in side-by-side arrangements, revealing two different wake modulation characteristics dominated by LC and SC, depending on the combinations of diameter ratio, gap ratio, and Reynolds number. In the LC-dominated wake modulation, the wake pattern of side-by-side cylinders is determined by the vortex dynamics in the LC wake, while in the SC-governing wake modulation, the LC wake pattern is modulated and controlled by the SC wake connections.
