Partial confinement effects on the performance of a flapping foil power generator

Zhengliang Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, the numerical impacts of partial confinement on the power extraction performance of a flapping foil generator at a Reynolds number of 1100 are investigated. The results show that the power-extraction efficiency is mainly influenced by the upstream confinement, with the downstream confinement having much less significant impact. Contrary to previous studies on infinite walls, this study demonstrates a significant decrease in efficiency with decreasing distance between the plates and the foil, due to reduced lift forces and large mass flow deficits.

Interaction of two fully passive flapping foils arranged in tandem and its influence on flow energy harvesting

Fuwang Zhao et al.

Summary: We studied a novel flow-energy harvesting system consisting of two tandem fully passive flapping foils and investigated its dynamics and energy harvesting performance. Experimental tests and numerical simulations were conducted to understand the wake-foil and foil-foil interaction mechanism. It was found that the aft foil was modulated and locked by the wake of the fore foil, resulting in a stable phase difference between the two foils that varied linearly with the tandem distance. The aft foil consistently exhibited higher heaving and pitch velocities, extracting an average of 15.2% more power than the fore foil and the single foil. The best power extraction efficiency of 19.6% was achieved by the aft foil when the foils were separated by one chord length, while the fore foil had a worst efficiency of 15.9% when separated by two chord lengths. Overall, the two foils achieved a maximum efficiency of 36.8%, surpassing the doubled efficiency (33.4%) of a single foil.

Energy harvesting performance of a tandem-hydrofoil based closely-interconnected tidal array

Guangjian Wang et al.

Summary: Hydrofoil based tidal arrays offer a promising solution for large-scale power generation by providing high efficiency, cost effectiveness, and minimal interference to the marine environment. This study proposes an efficient tandem-hydrofoil based closely interconnected tidal array, which achieves constructive foil-foil interactions and significantly enhances capacity density and energy efficiency. The results show that the proposed configuration has 3 times higher capacity density and 4 times higher hydrofoil deployment density compared to existing studies, while reducing the levelized cost of electricity by 50% through improved energy capture and reduced capital expenditures.

Hydrodynamic force induced by vortex-body interactions in orderly formations of flapping tandem flexible plates

Linlin Kang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a vorticity-based force expression to investigate the collective behaviors of two-dimensional tandem flapping plates. The research reveals that the wake vortices of the leader indirectly influence the hydrodynamic force on the rear plate by inducing an additional oncoming flow. The trajectory of the rear plate affects the generation of vorticity, with suppressed vorticity generation and weakened thrust effect when passing through vortex cores, and enhanced vorticity generation and thrust effect when slaloming between the vortices. The findings also highlight the ability of wake vortices to trap the rear plate into orderly configurations.

Enhanced performance of tandem plunging airfoils with an asymmetric pitching motion

Zhe Chen et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the effects of asymmetric pitching on tandem plunging airfoils in a horizontal freestream. Numerical methods were used to examine the aerodynamic performance and vortical structures of the tandem airfoils. It was found that the tandem arrangement enhances propulsion thrust while maintaining lift capacity at a non-zero alpha(0). The phase angles and inter-foil spacing have coupled effects on the performance, with an out-of-phase mode suggested for optimal lift and thrust enhancement at G/c = 1.

Energy harnessing of multiple semi-active flapping ellipses in V-shape formation

Lingyun Gong et al.

Summary: In this study, numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the influence of different spacings on the energy harnessing efficiency of a two-foil system. A staggered arrangement with a specific normalized spacing was found to be the most favorable, leading to a nearly 40% improvement in efficiency for the downstream foil. Furthermore, a V-shape formation for multiple-foil systems was proposed and verified to achieve nearly twice the energy efficiency compared to a single foil.

Summary: This study examines the responses of two oscillating hydrofoils with a tandem arrangement, finding that the downstream hydrofoil has inferior energy harvesting performance due to operating in the wake of the upstream hydrofoil. Negative wake vortex interactions can lead to different equilibrium positions and lower energy harvesting performance of the downstream hydrofoil, especially at high oscillation frequencies.

Summary: A comprehensive investigation was conducted to evaluate the effect of changing pitching axis position and offsetting mass center displacement on the power extraction performance of a semi active flapping airfoil power generator. The optimized pitching axis position and offsetting mass center displacement were found at d = c/2 and x(theta) = -0.15c respectively, with the pitching axis position having a weaker effect on performance compared to offsetting mass center displacement. The vortex structure analysis revealed that the leading-edge vortex behavior is crucial in enhancing the power extraction performance of the airfoil.
