Linear Instability of Breathers for the Focusing Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation

Mariana Haragus et al.

Summary: In this study, we discuss the linear instability of the Kuznetsov-Ma breathers and the Akhmediev breathers of the focusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation using tools from the theory of integrable systems. By constructing the exact solutions of the Lax system associated with the breathers using the Darboux transformation, we obtain a full description of the Lax spectra for the two breathers, including multiplicities of eigenvalues. Solutions of the linearized NLS equations are then obtained from the eigenfunctions and generalized eigenfunctions of the Lax system.

Doubly periodic solutions and breathers of the Hirota equation: recurrence, cascading mechanism and spectral analysis

H. M. Yin et al.

Summary: This article investigates the Hirota equation, which is an extension of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation incorporating third-order dispersion. The doubly periodic solutions of the Hirota equation are established using theta and elliptic functions. It is found that cubic dispersion preserves numerical robustness, as slightly disturbed exact solutions still evolve to the analytical configurations. In contrast to the nonlinear Schrodinger case, the wavenumber of the envelope in the Hirota equation must satisfy an algebraic equation related to the magnitude of the quadratic / cubic terms and the period of the wave patterns. The article also studies a cascading mechanism in the Hirota equation, providing insights into the first formation of breather modes.

Complexity of modulation instability

Auro M. Perego et al.

Summary: This Research Letter analyzes the computational complexity of modulation instability in a light wave propagating in a single-mode optical fiber using experimental data. The study shows that computational complexity is a useful tool for understanding the emergence of coherent structures induced by modulation instability, both in the linear stage and the nonlinear stage.

Breather stripes and radial breathers of the two-dimensional sine-Gordon equation

P. G. Kevrekidis et al.

Summary: This study investigates the transverse instability of a 2D breather stripe of the sine-Gordon equation. Numerical calculations and analytical predictions show good agreement in the long-wavelength limit. Direct simulations reveal that the instability results in the breakup of the breather into a chain of interacting 2D radial breathers, which exhibit robust dynamics.

Modulational instability of two obliquely interacting waves with different carrier frequencies

Sabyasachi Chakrabortty et al.

Summary: The paper investigates the crossing sea state situation characterized by two obliquely interacting water wave systems having different carrier frequencies in finite depth domain. Nonlinear evolution equations are derived to study the instability properties of two obliquely interacting uniform wave trains for both unidirectional and bidirectional perturbations. It is found that the growth rate of modulational instability increases with the decrease in angle of interaction of the two wave systems and also with the increase in the ratio of the carrier wave numbers of the two wave systems. The growth rate of instability decreases with the increase in water depth, while it increases with the increase in wave steepness of the second wave system.

Extraordinary modulation instability in optics and hydrodynamics

Guillaume Vanderhaegen et al.

Summary: The classical theory of modulation instability is a linear approximation with limitations, but weakly nonlinear theory provides a better explanation for experimental results, showing that MI has a wider band of unstable frequencies than predicted. The range of areas where the nonlinear theory of MI can be applied is actually much larger than considered.

Four-wave mixing and coherently coupled Schrodinger equations: Cascading processes and Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou recurrence

H. M. Yin et al.

Summary: Modulation instability, breather formation, and the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou recurrence (FPUT) phenomena are studied in nonlinear systems arising from slightly anisotropic media. The Darboux transformation is used to calculate a class of breathers, and a cascading mechanism is utilized to elucidate the initial stages of FPUT. An analytical formula for breather formation in a two-waveguide system is proposed, showing excellent agreement with numerical simulations.
