Drought assessment of China in 2002-2017 based on a comprehensive drought index

Yuyue Xu et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new drought index (Detrended-CCDI) and uses it to monitor drought in China. The results show that Detrended-CCDI has a good drought monitoring capability and captures drought recovery more quickly than other indices. It is more accurate in detecting drought trends and can identify more trends associated with becoming wetter or drier. Additionally, Detrended-CCDI has a lower drought frequency and higher similarity in regional drought events compared to other indices.

Temporal and spatial evolution of drought in Haihe River Basin from 1960 to 2020

Minhua Ling et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the temporal and spatial evolution of drought in the Haihe River Basin using the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index and other methods. The results indicate an increasing frequency of drought in the basin, particularly a significant increase in severe and extreme drought since 1990. The barycenters of drought are mainly located in the central part of the basin, with a northeast to southwest migration trend.

Effects of climate variability on an estuarine green crab Carcinus maenas population

Joao N. Monteiro et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the effects of climate variability on the population dynamics of the green crab Carcinus maenas in the Mondego estuary from 2003 to 2018. It found that recruitment of C. maenas increased during drought periods, with ontogenic stage segregation observed and a correlation between biological features of C. maenas and environmental variables identified through cumulative sums analysis. This highlights the importance of long-term datasets in understanding the impacts of extreme weather events on estuarine species.

Climate change, drought, land degradation and migration: exploring the linkages

Kathleen Hermans et al.

Summary: This paper reviews existing research on how droughts affect land degradation-migration dynamics, highlighting the pathways by which migration is affected by and responds to the climatic driver. Common challenges encountered by researchers are discussed, and future directions and priorities for research are identified.

Temporal analysis of drought characteristics in the tropical semi-arid zone of Nigeria

Joseph Omoniyi Adejuwon et al.

Summary: This study examined drought characteristics in the semi-arid tropics of Nigeria from 1981 to 2012, showing a decline in drought frequency and variations in intensity and duration. The northeastern area was identified as the most notorious for extreme drought events, with fluctuations in drought intensity and extensive monthly inconsistency.
