The sphaleron rate from 4D Euclidean lattices

Marc Barroso Mancha et al.

Summary: We developed a new four-dimensional Euclidean method to determine thermal activation rates, which allows nonperturbative study on the lattice. We investigated the strong sphaleron rate in pure-glue QCD at temperatures ranging from 1.3 T-c to 1000 T-c, extending previous results close to the critical temperature. The limitations of the proposal, such as the inability to compute a certain dynamical prefactor, puzzling large-volume behavior, and the inability to treat temperatures below 1.3 T-c, were also discussed.

Novel model-marginalized cosmological bound on the QCD axion mass

Eleonora Di Valentino et al.

Summary: We have presented model-marginalized limits on mixed hot dark matter scenarios, incorporating thermal neutrinos and thermal QCD axions. Our analysis included small-scale cosmic microwave background (CMB) observations from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) and the South Pole Telescope (SPT), as well as data from the Planck satellite and baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) measurements. The combination of ACT, Planck, and BAO yielded the tightest 95% Confidential Level (CL) upper bound of 0.21 eV for both P m nu and ma.

Cosmological implications of axion-matter couplings

Daniel Green et al.

Summary: In this paper, the cosmological constraints on the couplings of axions and other pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons to Standard Model fermions are revisited. The focus is on the couplings below the electroweak scale, and the calculation of the production rates is updated to eliminate unnecessary approximations. The study finds that the cosmological bounds on these interactions complement astrophysical constraints, such as those from supernova SN 1987A.

Upper Limit on the QCD Axion Mass from Isolated Neutron Star Cooling

Malte Buschmann et al.

Summary: Researchers found that four nearby isolated neutron stars (NSs) and PSR J0659 are ideal objects for studying the cooling phenomenon of axions. However, the study showed no evidence of axions in the data. The research further constrained the mass of axions in the context of the Kim-Shifman-Vainshtein-Zakharov QCD axion model.

Thermal Axion Production at Low Temperatures: A Smooth Treatment of the

Francesco D'Eramo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanism of thermal axion production around the confinement scale. By considering the masses of heavy quarks at higher temperatures and quantifying production via hadron scattering at lower temperatures, a continuous axion production rate across the QCD phase transition is obtained. Such a rate is then used to quantify the contribution of axions to the effective number of neutrino species.

Francesco D'Eramo et al.

Summary: In this study, the joint constraints in the mixed hot dark matter scenario were revisited to provide updated bounds on axion and neutrino masses. By avoiding approximate methods and limitations, robust and self-consistent limits were obtained. Future observations are expected to improve the constraints on the axion mass.

Enhanced Supernova Axion Emission and Its Implications

Pierluca Carenza et al.

Summary: The study found that the axion emission rate from reactions involving thermal pions in supernovae and neutron star mergers is 2-5 times larger than nucleon-nucleon bremsstrahlung previously considered dominant. The axion spectrum is also harder, implying a stronger bound on the mass of the QCD axion and better prospects for direct detection in a large underground neutrino detector from a nearby galactic supernova.

Dine-Fischler-Srednicki-Zhitnitsky axion in the CMB

Ricardo Z. Ferreira et al.

Summary: A dedicated analysis of cosmological constraints on DFSZ QCD axion models is performed for the first time, revealing that the axion mass is constrained to be less than or equal to 0.2 eV at 95% confidence level when the axion coupling to pions is maximal. However, constraints on the axion mass can be significantly relaxed when the coupling is small. Additionally, combining cosmological data with hints from experiments and stellar cooling, the mass of the axion in DFSZ-I and DFSZ-II models is found to be within the range of 0.07 eV to 1.8(0.3) eV.
