Interaction of Active Janus Colloids with Tracers

Karnika Singh et al.

Summary: The study investigates the motion of active SiO2-Pt Janus particles in a complex environment of passive silica tracers, revealing significant impacts of collisions on the swimmers' motion. The frequency and nature of collisions determine the overall impact of tracers on the active particles, with high-density tracers leading to novel organizational behavior of tracers around the active particles.

Emergence of active turbulence in microswimmer suspensions due to active hydrodynamic stress and volume exclusion

Kai Qi et al.

Summary: This study presents computational simulations of spheroidal model-microswimmers confined between two walls, revealing two collective dynamic states, depending on density and hydrodynamic interactions. Microswimmers exhibit an highly-dynamic collective motion with large-scale swirling patterns denoted as active turbulence. Various approaches have been applied to elucidate similarities and differences of inertial hydrodynamic and active turbulence.

Force Generation in Confined Active Fluids: The Role of Microstructure

Shuvojit Paul et al.

Summary: In this study, we experimentally determined the force exerted by a bath of active particles onto a passive probe as a function of its distance to a wall and compared it to the measured averaged density distribution of active particles around the probe. We demonstrated that both quantities are directly related to each other, up to a factor, within the framework of an active stress. Our results were in excellent agreement with a minimal numerical model and confirmed a general and system-independent relationship between the microstructure of active particles and transmitted forces.

Kinetic Phase Diagram for Nucleation and Growth of Competing Crystal Polymorphs in Charged Colloids

Willem Gispen et al.

Summary: In this study, we determined the kinetic phase diagram for nucleation and growth of crystal phases in a suspension of charged colloids. Our simulations show that the nucleation barrier heights for different crystal phases vary with screening lengths and supersaturations. We found that the crystal polymorph with the lowest nucleation barrier occurs in the entire metastable fluid region, and even though fcc is the stable phase, bcc can form due to a lower nucleation barrier close to the triple point. Additionally, at higher supersaturation, we observed a mix of different crystal structures in both the growth of crystalline seeds and spontaneously formed crystals.

Motility and self-organization of gliding Chlamydomonas populations

Sebastian Till et al.

Summary: Cellular appendages such as cilia and flagella play a crucial role in cell and microbial motility. This article investigates the flagella-mediated motility of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, a biflagellated microbe, as well as the gliding motility of surface-associated Chlamydomonas cells, and demonstrates their impact on cell clustering and self-organization through experiments and statistical analysis. By employing Minkowski functionals, the spatiotemporal organization of the cell monolayer is characterized, and it is found that a purely mechanistic approach fails to capture the observed cell configurations, whereas a minimal cognitive model of flagellar mechanosensing achieves quantitative agreement with experimental data.

Viscoelastic control of spatiotemporal order in bacterial active matter

Song Liu et al.

Summary: Active matter is composed of units that generate mechanical work by consuming energy, such as living systems and biopolymers. The goal is to understand and control the self-organization in space and time. Most active systems exhibit spatial order or temporal synchronization, while simultaneous control of spatial and temporal organization requires complex interactions.

Vorticity Determines the Force on Bodies Immersed in Active Fluids

Thomas Speck et al.

Summary: This study explores the directed motion of passive bodies in a fluid of active Brownian particles, showing that the forces responsible for this motion can be related to density and current induced by the body but located far away. The force involved in this motion is a combination of dipolar field strength and the generation of nonvanishing vorticity due to particles leaving the boundary. The localized vorticity near the body and areas of changing local curvature allow for the rational design of particle shapes with desired propulsion properties.

Active phase separation by turning towards regions of higher density

Jie Zhang et al.

Summary: A new class of behavior in active matter has been discovered, where orientational interactions lead to active phase separation. Experimentally, it was shown that self-propelled Janus colloids exhibit non-reciprocal torques that orient particle motion towards high-density regions, resulting in phase separation into fluid-like clusters.
