Instability in axion inflation with strong backreaction from gauge modes

Marco Peloso et al.

Summary: We have performed an analytical study on the stability of the background solution of a model where an inflaton, with an axionic coupling to a U(1) gauge field, amplifies the gauge field modes that backreact on its dynamics. By perturbatively treating the deviation of the inflaton velocity from its mean-field value, we have found that as long as the system is in the strong backreaction regime, the inflaton velocity exhibits increasing amplitude oscillations around the value it would have in the approximation of constant velocity, confirming the instability observed in numerical studies.

Inflation and Primordial Black Holes

Ogan Ozsoy et al.

Summary: We review the conceptual aspects of inflationary scenarios that can lead to the formation of primordial black holes by amplifying the size of curvature fluctuations. Various mechanisms are identified for both single-field and multiple-field inflation. In single-field inflation, the enhancement of curvature fluctuations occurs through non-slow-roll inflationary evolution induced by pronounced gradients of background quantities. In multiple-field inflation, amplification is achieved through appropriate couplings with additional sectors characterized by tachyonic instabilities.

CosmoLattice: A modern code for lattice simulations of scalar and gauge field dynamics in an expanding universe

Daniel G. Figueroa et al.

Summary: This paper introduces CosmoGattice, a modern package for lattice simulations of interacting scalar and gauge fields in an expanding universe. CosmoGattice is versatile and powerful, written in C++ with a modular structure and a clear separation of physics and technical details. It incorporates its own symbolic language and a library of numerical algorithms suitable for simulating global and gauge theories in an expanding grid.

Lattice simulations of axion-U(1) inflation

Angelo Caravano et al.

Summary: We present the first nonlinear lattice simulation of the axion field coupled to a U(1) gauge field during inflation, and use it to fully characterize the statistics of the primordial curvature perturbation ζ. We find that high-order statistics are crucial in describing the non-Gaussianity of ζ in the linear regime of the theory, but non-Gaussianity is suppressed in the nonlinear dynamics. This relaxation of bounds allows for an observable gravitational wave signal at pulsar timing array and interferometer scales. Our work establishes lattice simulations as a crucial tool in studying the inflationary epoch and its predictions.

Baryogenesis from combined Higgs-scalar field inflation

Yann Cado et al.

Summary: We study a modification of the Higgs inflation scenario by introducing an extra scalar field phi, which is coupled to the Ricci scalar and mixed with the Higgs field h. By coupling phi to the Chern-Simons term, helical magnetic fields are generated during inflation. This model can solve the instability problem of the Standard Model and predicts modifications that can be explored at future colliders.

The art of simulating the early universe. Part I. Integration techniques and canonical cases

Daniel G. Figueroa et al.

Summary: In this paper, lattice techniques for simulating scalar and gauge field dynamics in an expanding universe are comprehensively discussed. The discretization of field theories, numerical algorithms, and lattice formulations for interacting scalar fields and gauge theories are presented. Symplectic integrators with different accuracy levels are provided for each case, along with relevant observables and constraints. The article also introduces the theoretical basis for the CosmoLattice code, a MPI-based package for simulating the non-linear evolution of field theories in an expanding universe.

Gauge-field production during axion inflation in the gradient expansion formalism

E. V. Gorbar et al.

Summary: This study investigates the explosive production of gauge fields during axion inflation using a novel gradient expansion formalism. By considering the backreaction of the produced gauge fields and the Schwinger pair production of charged particles in a strong gauge-field background, it is shown that the Schwinger effect can suppress gauge-field production to prevent backreaction. Additionally, the induced current is found to dampen Bunch-Davies vacuum fluctuations deep inside the Hubble horizon.
