Hierarchical Colloidosomes and Superlattices via Confined Assembly of Polymer-Tethered Inorganic Nanoparticles

Xuan Yue et al.

Summary: This study investigates the self-assembly of polymer-tethered metal nanoparticle building blocks using an emulsion interface self-assembly strategy. It successfully obtains hollow colloidosomes with a highly ordered hexagonal arrangement of metal nanoparticle building blocks. The interparticle distance within the colloidosomes can be tuned by adjusting the molecular weight of the polymeric ligands. Furthermore, it shows that sheet-like superlattices can be formed by increasing the volume fraction of the internal hexadecane phase. The prepared colloidosomes have potential applications in surface enhanced Raman scattering and photothermal therapy.

Shaping the genome via lengthwise compaction, phase separation, and lamina adhesion

Sumitabha Brahmachari et al.

Summary: This article explores the link between genomic structure and function, highlighting the crucial role of physical manipulation of the genome by various proteins. By constructing a coarse-grained polymer model of the genome, the authors demonstrate how interactions among different classes of genomic interactions can drive predictable changes in global genome architecture and make testable predictions.

Principles of 3D chromosome folding and evolutionary genome reshuffling in mammals

Lucia Alvarez-Gonzalez et al.

Summary: This article describes the principles of studying the similarities and differences in genomic interactions between species and presents the patterns of 3D genome folding in vertebrates and lineage-specific patterns of genome reshuffling. By identifying different patterns of chromosome folding, reconstructing ancestral genomes, detecting lineage-specific chromosome rearrangements, and analyzing the dynamics of genome reshuffling, the article explores the interplay between chromatin higher-order organization and therian genome evolution, and proposes a hypothesis to explain the influence of chromatin folding on evolutionary patterns of genome reshuffling.

Polymer modelling unveils the roles of heterochromatin and nucleolar organizing regions in shaping 3D genome organization in Arabidopsis thaliana

Marco Di Stefano et al.

Summary: The 3D genome of the plant Arabidopsis thaliana is characterized by a complex organization involving nucleolus formation and epigenomics-driven interactions. Self-attracting nucleolar organizing regions and repulsive constitutive heterochromatin are major mechanisms shaping chromosome organization. The study provides insights into the generic principles that likely regulate the 3D genome in various species.

Switching (bio-) adhesion and friction in liquid by stimulus responsive polymer coatings

Yunlong Yu et al.

Summary: Control of adhesion and friction in liquid environments using surface-bound stimulus responsive polymers is crucial in biomedical and industrial applications. Polymer brushes play a key role in the specific interactions between surfaces, affecting the swelling and tribomechanical properties of the polymer film. Understanding these interactions and their changes in varying environments is essential for designing effective smart coatings. The potential impact of polymer-based smart adhesives and lubricants on industry and society is also discussed in this review.

DNA damage-how and why we age?

Matt Yousefzadeh et al.

Summary: Aging is a complex process that involves DNA damage leading to cells entering apoptosis or senescence to avoid replicating a damaged genome. DNA damage is also linked to other cellular processes implicated as drivers of aging, supporting the idea that DNA damage could be the root cause of aging.

3D genomics across the tree of life reveals condensin II as a determinant of architecture type

Claire Hoencamp et al.

Summary: The study identified two types of three-dimensional genome architectures at the chromosome scale in eukaryotes, with one type correlated with the absence of condensin II subunits. Depletion of condensin II in humans results in a genome structure resembling that of fungi or mosquitoes. The research proposes a physical model in which condensin II compacts chromosomes lengthwise during mitosis, influencing the chromosome-scale genome architecture.
