Excellent photocatalytic properties in 2D ZnO/SiC van der Waals hetero-bilayers: water-splitting H2-fuel production

Md. Rasidul Islam et al.

Summary: This research investigates the photocatalytic properties of a 2D ZnO/SiC van der Waals hetero-bilayer for water-splitting applications. Four stacking patterns are considered, and their electronic and optical properties are studied with and without biaxial external strain. The results show that pattern-I and II have good chemical and mechanical stabilities, and they exhibit bandgaps of 2.86 eV and 2.74 eV, respectively. The 2D ZnO/SiC hetero-bilayer has a high absorption coefficient and its absorption peak can increase by approximately 3.5 times under strain. The strain-induced decrease in bandgap promotes photocatalytic reactions, making 2D ZnO/SiC a potential material for hydrogen fuel production through water-splitting.

Vibrational effect on vacancy concentration in diamond: The density-functional-theory calculation

Zohan Syah Fatomi et al.

Summary: The vacancy concentration of C-vacancy in diamond was calculated using density functional theory (DFT). The phonon density of states (P-h-DOS) was found to significantly contribute to the vacancy concentration by softening on the vacancy side, increasing it up to 106 times compared to neglecting the vibrational effect.
