Simulation of hollow-cathode-nitriding plasma and design of diffusion equipment with DC and RF dual discharge

Zhehao Zhang et al.

Summary: A two-dimensional multi-physics model was developed to investigate the impact of a hollow-cathode structure on plasma distribution and eliminate the edge effect observed on nitrided metals. The model simulated the effects of essential plasma diffusion parameters, and a simple experiment was designed to validate it. The proposed model, based on actual device dimensions, can be used to simulate, predict, and control the plasma formation process, providing reference data and guidance for optimizing diffusion processes and structural design of diffusion furnaces.

Synthesis of biocompatible coating on Ni-Cr alloy by cathodic cage plasma processing technique as anti-pathogenic bacteria for medicinal applications

Muhammad Asghar et al.

Summary: A titanium-based multilayer coating (TiO/TiN) was deposited on Ni-Cr metallic alloy using a cathodic cage plasma processing technique. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the presence of TiO/TiN with specific energy levels for Ti, N, and O. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed a polycrystalline structure with a crystallite size of 32 nm. The corrosion analysis showed improved corrosion resistance and antibacterial activity of the TiO/TiN-coated specimens. This research provides insights into the biological features of metallic materials for medicinal applications.

Enhanced tribological behavior of VAlN hard ceramic coating with intermittent amorphous carbon layer

Yupeng Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a DC magnetron sputtered VAlN hard ceramic coating was modified by post-annealing treatment with graphite powder, resulting in an intermittent amorphous carbon (a-C) top-layer. The modified coating exhibited high hardness (34.4 GPa) and excellent self-adaptive lubrication from room temperature to 600 degrees C. The low friction coefficient (0.11) at 300 degrees C was attributed to the lamellar sliding interface between the a-C top-layer and the a-C transfer film (30 nm-68 nm), while the increased and stabilized friction coefficient (0.36-0.41) at 600 degrees C was attributed to the formation of V2O5 lubricating phase. The tribological behavior of the modified VAlN coating by a-C top-layer was further analyzed in terms of microstructure evolution during friction test.

Improved saline corrosion and hydrogen embrittlement resistances of superaustenitic stainless steel by PIII nitriding

Bruna C. E. Schibicheski Kurelo et al.

Summary: PIII nitriding was applied to improve wear resistance of superaustenitic steel without compromising its pitting and hydrogen embrittlement corrosion resistance. Nitrided layers with gN phase were formed, leading to increased hardness and enhanced pitting and crevice corrosion resistance. However, nitriding at higher temperature resulted in reduced resistance to saline corrosion and increased hydrogen embrittlement.
