Liquid-hexatic-solid phases in active and passive Brownian particles determined by stochastic birth and death events

Alejandro Almodovar et al.

Summary: The effects of stochastic birth and death processes on the structural phases of systems of active and passive Brownian particles subject to volume exclusion were studied. Liquid, hexatic, and solid phases were found as the birth and death parameters varied. Motility-induced phase separation occurred for active particles at large activity and sufficiently small birth rates, while the phases for passive particles were spatially homogeneous. A reentrant transition to the hexatic phase was observed when the birth rate was increased.

Anomalous behavior of a two-dimensional Hertzian disk system

Eu A. Gaiduk et al.

Summary: The anomalous behavior of a two-dimensional system of Hertzian disks with exponent alpha = 7/2 has been studied using the method of molecular dynamics. Waterlike density and diffusion anomalies have been found in the reentrant melting regions. The density anomaly has been observed not only in the liquid and hexatic but also in the solid phase.

Bridging particle deformability and collective response in soft solids

John D. Treado et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of single-particle deformability on soft solids, finding that deformable particles with excess shape degrees of freedom exhibit low-frequency quartic vibrational modes that stabilize packings, even with fewer interparticle contacts. Constraints can rigidify particles, but they may undergo a buckling transition and gain an effective shaping degree of freedom above a certain threshold value. The mechanical response of deformable particles differs significantly from rigid-shape particles, highlighting the importance of particle deformability in modeling soft solids.

Structural transition in two-dimensional Hertzian spheres in the presence of random pinning

E. N. Tsiok et al.

Summary: Random pinning has been found to profoundly alter the phase diagram and melting scenarios of a two-dimensional system with the Hertz potential by generating different phases transitions. The transitions between different crystal phases involve both continuous and first-order processes.

Melting of Neel skyrmion lattice

Pavel Balaz et al.

Summary: The melting of particle lattice in two-dimensional systems follows the KTHNY theory, where topological defects are excited leading to the transition from solid to liquid phase via the hexatic phase. Through numerical simulations, the melting process of a Neel skyrmion lattice at low temperatures was studied, showing agreement with the KTHNY theory.

Signatures of continuous hexatic-liquid transition in two-dimensional melting

Jialing Guo et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that by increasing the dispersity of particle size or stiffness, the two-dimensional melting can transition from discontinuous to continuous. In the continuous melting state, the defect concentrations and correlation length on the boundary between hexatic and liquid phases remain almost constant.

Two-step melting of the Weeks-Chandler-Anderson system in two dimensions

Shubhendu Shekhar Khali et al.

Summary: The detailed numerical simulation study of a two-dimensional system interacting via the Weeks-Chandler-Anderson potential reveals a two-step melting process: continuous melting from solid to hexatic phase, followed by a first-order melting from hexatic to liquid phase. The solid-hexatic melting is consistent with the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless-Halperin-Nelson-Young (BKTHNY) scenario while the hexatic-liquid melting displays defect-strings formed at the interfaces.
