Revisiting the systematics of the genera Grateloupia, Phyllymenia, and Prionitis (Halymeniaceae, Rhodophyta) with a description of a new species-Prionitis taiwani-borealis

Conxi Rodriguez-Prieto et al.

Summary: The classification of the genera Grateloupia, Phyllymenia, and Prionitis remains controversial and relies on the anatomy of female reproductive structures and phylogenetic reconstructions. A new species of Prionitis was discovered in Taiwan, revealing common characteristics of female reproductive structures among related species and supporting a monophyletic relationship based on combined rbcL and LSU rDNA sequence analyses. Further reinvestigation into the female reproductive structures of Grateloupia sensu lato species closely related to Prionitis and Phyllymenia is needed for resolving the systematics of the Halymeniaceae.

The genus Schizymenia (Nemastomatales, Rhodophyta) on the Russian coast of the northwest Pacific and description of S. tamarae sp. nov

Oksana S. Belous et al.

Summary: We analyzed sequence data of rbcL and COI in Schizymenia specimens from the Sea of Okhotsk and Sea of Japan. A new species, S. tamarae sp. nov., was discovered in the northwestern Sea of Japan. Morphological and genetic analyses confirmed that the previously described S. jonssonii is a synonym of S. dubyi var. palmata, which was originally described from the Kuril Islands. The taxon was synonymized with Neoabbottiella valentinae. We propose renaming it as Schizymenia valentinae comb. nov. The known Schizymenia species along the Russian coast are S. valentinae and S. tamarae.

Morphological and molecular reassessment of three species ofBesa(Phyllophoraceae, Rhodophyta) from the North-west Pacific

Svetlana Y. Shibneva et al.

Summary: The study revealed that 'Ahnfeltiopsis flabelliformis' does not occur in the Far Eastern seas, and algae previously identified as such in Russian waters belong to two distinct species within the genus Besa. Additionally, a new unattached form of B. divaricata was discovered based on morphology and ecological features.

Resurrection of the Family Grateloupiaceae Emend. (Halymeniales, Rhodophyta) Based on a Multigene Phylogeny and Comparative Reproductive Morphology

Su Yeon Kim et al.

Summary: The marine red algal order Halymeniales consists of two families, the Halymeniaceae and Tsengiaceae, with a total of 38 genera and around 358 species. Extensive phylogenetic analyses were conducted to reassess the phylogeny of the order, leading to the reinstatement of the family Grateloupiaceae based on distinctive characteristics. The Grateloupiaceae is distinguished from the Halymeniaceae by specific reproductive structures and includes nine genera.
