Effects of haloxyfop-p-methyl on the developmental toxicity, neurotoxicity, and immunotoxicity in zebrafish

Yi Liu et al.

Summary: Pesticides, such as haloxyfop-p-methyl, are harmful to the aquatic ecosystem as they leave residues in soil, water, and agricultural products. This study investigated the toxic effects of haloxyfop-p-methyl on zebrafish and found developmental, neurotoxic, and immunotoxic effects. Zebrafish larvae exhibited spinal deformities, decreased body length, slow heart rate, and enlarged yolk sac area. Behavior analysis showed reduced activity, accompanied by higher AChE activity. Exposure to haloxyfop-p-methyl also induced oxidative stress and affected immune cell populations in the thymus. Furthermore, haloxyfop-p-methyl caused neutrophil apoptosis and increased expression of proinflammatory cytokine genes. These findings provide insights into the toxicological mechanisms of haloxyfop-p-methyl in teleosts.

Toxic effects of isofenphos-methyl on zebrafish embryonic development

Yuanzhao Wu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the developmental and neurotoxic effects of Isofenphos-methyl (IFP) on zebrafish embryos. IFP exposure resulted in abnormal heart development, uninflated swim bladder, and behavioral defects. Furthermore, IFP exposure activated oxidative stress and reduced acetylcholinesterase (AChE) content.

Immunotoxicity induced by triclocarban exposure in zebrafish triggering the risk of pancreatic cancer

Huili Wang et al.

Summary: Based on transcriptome sequencing data analysis of zebrafish, it was confirmed that triclocarban (TCC) exposure induced oxidative stress and dysimmunity through transcriptional regulation of related genes. Pancreatic cancer sample data and differential transcription profiles were analyzed to identify 52 common differentially expressed genes related to immunity in TCC-exposed larvae. TCC exposure affected immune cell development, reduced immunoglobulin levels, promoted excessive release of pro-inflammatory factors, and inhibited antioxidant activity, increasing the risk of pancreatic cancer.

Sulfoxaflor induces immunotoxicity in zebrafish (Danio rerio) by activating TLR4/NF-xB signaling pathway

Kexin Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the molecular mechanism of the insecticide sulfoxaflor on non-target species using zebrafish as the experimental subject. The results show that exposure to sulfoxaflor leads to increased mortality, growth retardation, and decreased innate immune cells in zebrafish embryos. The expression levels of apoptotic and proapoptotic genes also increase significantly, along with changes in oxidative stress-related indexes. Further research reveals the activation of the Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)/nuclear factor kappa B (NF-xB) signaling pathway and upregulation of related gene expression. Inhibitor QNZ is able to rescue the effects by reducing TLR4/NF-xB signaling pathway-related protein expression and restoring the number of innate immune cells.

Study on the mechanism of liver toxicity induced by acenaphthene in zebrafish

June Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanism of hepatotoxicity caused by acenaphthene using zebrafish as an experimental model. The results revealed that acenaphthene induced oxidative stress through the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), leading to mitochondrial damage. Additionally, acenaphthene activated pathways associated with inflammation and apoptosis, resulting in hepatotoxicity and alterations in liver metabolism.

Bensulide-induced oxidative stress causes developmental defects of cardiovascular system and liver in zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Miji Kim et al.

Summary: This study revealed the toxic effects of bensulide on the embryonic development of zebrafish, including inhibition of hatching, decreased size of body, eyes, and inner ear, and adverse effects on the cardiovascular system and liver. Bensulide disrupted normal heart development and reduced heart rate, inhibited liver development and antioxidant enzyme expression, and increased ROS levels.

Side-effects of pesticides on non-target insects in agriculture: a mini-review

Jose Eduardo Serrao et al.

Summary: Climate change induced by human activities has significant effects on pest abundance and the use of pesticides in crop protection. However, the toxic effects of pesticides on beneficial insect communities have not received enough attention. This review provides detailed information about the sublethal effects of pesticides on agriculturally beneficial insects, focusing on their behavior and physiology.

A Common Feature of Pesticides: Oxidative Stress-The Role of Oxidative Stress in Pesticide-Induced Toxicity

Rasheed O. Sule et al.

Summary: Pesticides are important chemicals or biological agents used to deter or kill pests. While they are effective in reducing pests and increasing crop growth, they also have potential toxic effects on humans and wildlife, such as increased risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and birth defects. Pesticides induce oxidative stress, associated with various diseases, through reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. Limited in vitro studies suggest that exogenous antioxidants may mitigate the harmful effects of pesticides.

Exposure to pyrazosulfuron-ethyl induces immunotoxicity and behavioral abnormalities in zebrafish embryos

Li Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found that pyrazosulfuron-ethyl has significant adverse effects on early embryonic development and the immune system of zebrafish, including reduced survival, body length, heart rate, and behavioral abnormalities. Moreover, pyrazosulfuron-ethyl also caused a decrease in the number of neutrophils and macrophages, increased oxidative stress levels, and inhibited motor behavior in zebrafish larvae. Upregulation of the Notch signaling pathway was found to be associated with immunotoxicity.

Approaches to Test the Neurotoxicity of Environmental Contaminants in the Zebrafish Model: From Behavior to Molecular Mechanisms

Jennifer A. Fitzgerald et al.

Summary: The occurrence of neuroactive chemicals in the aquatic environment is increasing and poses a potential threat to aquatic biota. Zebrafish as a model organism provides a powerful tool for studying neurotoxicity and understanding the mechanisms of action of chemicals on teleost nervous systems from different perspectives. This knowledge can help infer potential effects on other species and predict risks of chemicals for the aquatic ecosystem.

Summary: Zebrafish are emerging as a powerful animal model for studying mental disorders and metabolic diseases due to their transparency, low maintenance costs, and genetic similarity to humans. Researchers highlight the importance of zebrafish in understanding communication pathways between the brain and other organs, as well as the potential for tracking metabolism and disease progression. The ease of tissue imaging, high offspring numbers, and availability of genetic techniques further contribute to the benefits of using zebrafish in biomedical research.
