Untargeted metabolomics reveals the preventive effect of quercetin on nephrotoxicity induced by four organophosphorus pesticide mixtures

Yali Hou et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the protective effect of quercetin against nephrotoxicity induced by four organophosphate pesticide mixtures using untargeted metabolomics technology. The results showed that quercetin can improve renal metabolic disorders caused by organophosphate pesticides and exert protective effects through regulating pathways such as purine metabolism, glycerophospholipid metabolism, and vitamin B6 metabolism.

Neuroprotective Effects of N-acetylserotonin and Its Derivative

Ji-He Kang et al.

Summary: N-Acetylserotonin (NAS) is a chemical intermediate in melatonin biosynthesis. NAS and its derivative HIOC have potential therapeutic effects for various diseases. They exert neuroprotective properties by inhibiting oxidative stress, apoptosis, autophagy dysfunction, and inflammation. This review discusses their neuroprotective effects and mechanisms, providing a reference for future research and applications.

Evaluation of the acute toxic response induced by triazophos to the non-target green algae Chlorella pyrenoidosa

Qi Su et al.

Summary: Residues of triazophos in aquatic ecosystems due to extensive use for controlling pests in agriculture has become a worldwide concern. This study investigated the potential toxicity and environmental risks of triazophos on non-target green algae in aquatic environment. The results showed that triazophos significantly inhibited the growth of green algae and caused a decrease in photosynthetic pigments and transcript abundance of photosynthesis-related genes. Additionally, it was observed that triazophos damaged the morphology of thylakoid chloroplast and inhibited energy metabolism of the algal cells. Furthermore, the inhibition of algal growth was associated with increased intracellular reactive oxygen species, activity of antioxidant enzymes, and lipid peroxidation. These findings suggest that triazophos poses potential toxicity and environmental risks to green algae, a primary producer in aquatic ecosystems.

Summary: This study assessed the metabolome of Mediterranean mussels exposed to the antidepressant venlafaxine, and found that multiple metabolites were modulated, with serotonin showing a similar modulation pattern in both male and female mussels. The modulation pattern of impacted metabolites varied over time and was gender-specific.

Metabolomic responses in livers of female and male zebrafish (Danio rerio) following prolonged exposure to environmental levels of zinc oxide nanoparticles

Xiaohong Wang et al.

Summary: This study reveals that female and male zebrafish showed comparable bioenergetic responses, but different metabolic responses to ZnONPs at an environmentally relevant dose. Females compensated for the energetic stress via increasing fatty acids and amino acids metabolism, while males compensated to ZnONPs exposure by adjusting amino acids metabolism in livers.

Determination of microplastics in the edible green-lipped mussel Perna viridis using an automated mapping technique of Raman microspectroscopy

Matthew Ming-Lok Leung et al.

Summary: Microplastics were found in green-lipped mussels collected from five mariculture sites in Hong Kong, with an average of 1.60-14.7 particles per mussel per site. It was estimated that the population in Hong Kong could ingest up to 10,380 pieces of microplastics per person per year through consumption of these contaminated mussels, indicating a potential human health risk in the region.

Metabolomics comparison of metabolites and functional pathways in the gills of Chlamys farreri under cadmium exposure

Huan Liu et al.

Summary: Exposure of the economically important shellfish Chlamys farreri to Cd2+ leads to changes in biological processes and metabolite levels, with impacts on lipid phosphorylation, disruption of signal transduction, and autophagy activation. Differential metabolites C00157 and C00350 play significant roles in functional pathways and can serve as potential major biomarkers. Metabolome information enhances research on C. farreri exposure to heavy metals and supports further multi-omics analysis.
