Distribution and quantification of activated platelets in platelet-rich fibrin matrices

Atsushi Sato et al.

Summary: Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is widely used in regenerative therapy due to its simple preparation. This study examined the distribution of activated platelets in four types of PRF matrices and found that the centrifugal conditions did not significantly affect platelet activation, but H-PRF was distinguishable from other derivatives in terms of activated platelet distribution.

Pros and cons of causative association between periodontitis and rheumatoid arthritis

Joanna Koziel et al.

Summary: Recent research has made significant advancements in understanding the molecular basis of autoimmune diseases, especially rheumatoid arthritis. New studies suggest that a more comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach is needed to understand the pathobiology of rheumatoid arthritis, including bacteria-induced inflammatory reactions as an important pathway. This article discusses the clinical and molecular association between periodontal diseases and the development of rheumatoid arthritis, as well as the unique role of periopathogens in the initiation and progression of this autoimmune disorder.

Histological comparison of Platelet rich fibrin clots prepared by fixed-angle versus horizontal centrifugation

Masako Fujioka-Kobayashi et al.

Summary: Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) was prepared from whole blood using two different centrifugation systems, fixed-angle and horizontal centrifugation. Results showed that the PRF clots produced by horizontal centrifugation had a more uniform blood cell separation compared to those produced by fixed-angle centrifugation. Future research is needed to evaluate the advantage of horizontal centrifugation in clinical practice.

Decontamination of rough implant surfaces colonized by multispecies oral biofilm by application of leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin

Luisa Schuldt et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the L-PRF treated samples showed close contact with bacteria without rinsing, with bacteria appearing perforated and increased in size; after post-treatment rinsing, the L-PRF treated disks displayed a significant reduction in bacterial counts (an average reduction of 92%).

Platelet activation and antimicrobial activity of L-PRF: a preliminary study

Antonio Melo-Ferraz et al.

Summary: Leukocyte and platelet rich fibrin (L-PRF) is effective in activating platelets and inhibiting microbial growth, making it a valuable tool in the healing process. Further research is needed to better understand the properties and potential benefits of L-PRF in clinical trials.

Periodontitis and rheumatoid arthritis: What have we learned about their connection and their treatment?

Jerian Gonzalez-Febles et al.

Summary: Rheumatoid arthritis and periodontitis are chronic inflammatory diseases characterized by the destruction of cartilage and periodontal tissues, with emerging evidence suggesting a possible link between specific bacterial periodontal pathogens and the development of autoantibodies in rheumatoid arthritis patients. Research is ongoing to explore the epidemiologic association and biological mechanisms between these two diseases, as well as the potential impact of periodontal treatment on the initiation and progression of rheumatoid arthritis.
