Image Quality Assessment: Unifying Structure and Texture Similarity

Keyan Ding et al.

Summary: This paper presents a full-reference image quality model with explicit tolerance to texture resampling. By using a convolutional neural network, the authors construct an injective and differentiable function to transform images. The proposed method combines texture similarity and structure similarity to match human ratings of image quality and achieves competitive performance on texture classification and retrieval tasks.

Beyond Brightening Low-light Images

Yonghua Zhang et al.

Summary: Images captured under low-light conditions often suffer from poor visibility due to multiple degradation factors. This study proposes a network based on Retinex theory, decomposing images into illumination and reflectance components to enhance image quality. Extensive experiments show the effectiveness and superiority of this method, especially in terms of flexibility and robustness against visual defects.

Residual Dense Network for Image Restoration

Yulun Zhang et al.

Summary: This work proposes a novel and efficient residual dense network (RDN) to address the problem of relatively-low performance in image restoration by better balancing efficiency and effectiveness in utilizing hierarchical features from all convolutional layers. The RDN utilizes residual dense blocks (RDB) and local feature fusion to extract abundant local features and adaptively learn more effective features, while also employing global feature fusion for learning global hierarchical features in a holistic way. Experimental results demonstrate that the RDN outperforms state-of-the-art methods in various image restoration tasks both quantitatively and visually.
