MicroRNAs and Long Non-coding RNAs as Novel Targets in Anti-cancer Drug Development

Melisa Cetinkaya et al.

Summary: Non-coding RNAs have crucial regulatory roles in cellular processes, particularly in gene expression. They have emerged as novel targets for anti-cancer drug development, with microRNAs being extensively studied in cancer biology and some microRNA-based therapeutics reaching clinical studies. Long non-coding RNAs are also gaining importance as potential therapeutic targets for cancer therapy. This chapter discusses the strategies and significance of targeting microRNAs and long non-coding RNAs, as well as clinical and preclinical studies involving microRNA and long non-coding RNA-based cancer therapeutics. Additionally, the importance of delivery strategies for effective non-coding RNA-based cancer therapeutics is highlighted.

Roles of non-coding RNAs in cell death pathways involved in the treatment of resistance and recurrence of cancer

Fatemeh Movahedi Motlagh et al.

Summary: In order to control or stop the burden of cancer, various methods have been applied. However, these treatments often fail due to drug resistance or cancer recurrence. Combining the modulation of non-coding RNA (ncRNA) expression with other treatments can increase treatment sensitivity, but there are still challenges to overcome. Gathering information in this field is essential for finding more efficient cancer cures.

LncRNA MEG3 alleviates PFOS induced placental cell growth inhibition through its derived miR-770 targeting PTX3

Jing Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the function of lncRNA MEG3 and its derived miR-770 in PFOS-induced placental toxicity. The results showed that expression levels of MEG3 and miR-770 were reduced in placentas and cells with PFOS exposure, and hypermethylation occurred at the MEG3 promoter. Additionally, overexpression of MEG3 and miR-770 helped alleviate PFOS-induced cell growth inhibition.

RNA and Protein Determinants Mediate Differential Binding of miRNAs by a Viral Suppressor of RNA Silencing Thus Modulating Antiviral Immune Responses in Plants

Robert Pertermann et al.

Summary: Plant viruses can produce suppressor proteins that inhibit RNA silencing, a mechanism of antiviral plant immunity. These proteins can bind to virus-derived siRNAs and miRNAs, influencing cellular gene expression. The study found that a specific viral suppressor protein, p19, can bind to different miRNAs with varying affinities due to specific features in the RNA and protein molecules. These findings provide important insights into the efficiency and adaptability of the plant antiviral immune response.

Comparative mRNA/micro-RNA co-expression network drives melanomagenesis by promoting epithelial-mesenchymal transition and vasculogenic mimicry signaling

WenFeng He et al.

Summary: This study identified PLA1A and DMKN genes as potential oncogenes that trigger the VM and EMT processes in melanomagenesis by interacting with miR-370, miR-563, and miR-770-5p. These genes can serve as diagnostic biomarkers for melanoma and contribute to early diagnosis and prognosis. The altered network involving PLA1A/miR563 and DMNK/miR-770-5p/miR-370 may play a role in melanomagenesis by activating the EMT signaling pathway and VM formation.
