Zoonotic parasites associated with predation by dogs and cats

Summary: Cats with indoor/outdoor lifestyle often bring hunted gifts to their owners, including small mammals, reptiles, and birds. The access of dogs and cats to the outdoors may pose risks such as diseases and accidents, but the impact of these roaming animals predating wildlife is also concerning. Predation not only threatens wildlife but also serves as a transmission route for parasitic diseases, some of which are zoonotic. Dogs and cats, both feral and domesticated, have contributed to the collapse or extinction of more than 63 species of reptiles, mammals, and birds. Awareness about the zoonotic risk of parasitic infections transmitted through predation will promote responsible ownership and proper actions to control feral and free-roaming cat and dog populations worldwide.

Role of reptiles and associated arthropods in the epidemiology of rickettsioses: A one health paradigm

Summary: The study indicates that reptiles play an epidemiological role in the transmission of spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiae and lizards could be involved in the sylvatic cycle of Rickettsia monacensis in southern Europe. First report of molecular and phylogenetic analysis of Physaloptera praeputialis in naturally infected stray cats from India

Summary: Physaloptera nematodes are globally distributed and infect a variety of hosts. This study represents the first molecular phylogenetic characterization of feline Physaloptera spp. from India, based on mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COX1) and small subunit ribosomal DNA (18S rDNA). The nucleotide homology analysis showed a high identity with other Physaloptera spp., placing them in the same cluster in the phylogenetic tree.
