Efficacy of oral, topical and extended-release injectable formulations of moxidectin combined with doxycycline in Dirofilaria immitis naturally infected dogs

Lavinia Ciuca et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy of different formulations of moxidectin combined with doxycycline in naturally infected dogs with D. immitis. The majority of dogs in all treatment groups showed antigen-negative status at Day 270. Radiographic improvements were observed in all treatment groups, and most dogs cleared pulmonary abnormalities within 6 months of treatment.

Haplotypes of Dirofilaria repens from Poland and selected countries of Central, North-Eastern Europe and the Middle East: An evaluation on the relation between the genetic diversity and the geographic distribution of the fast-spreading parasite

Mustafa Alsarraf et al.

Summary: Subcutaneous dirofilariosis is a rapidly spreading infection that affects dogs, carnivores, and even humans. This study aimed to assess the genetic diversity of the parasite and its spread across Europe, finding that climate change, movement of infected hosts, and the diversity of wild reservoirs contribute to the spread of the disease.

Human dirofilariosis in the 21st century: A scoping review of clinical cases reported in the literature

Fernando Simon et al.

Summary: Human dirofilariosis is caused by five species of Dirofilaria, mainly D. repens. Mature worms, most often females with microfilariae in the uterus, were commonly found. Clinical manifestations vary depending on anatomical location and type of dirofilariosis, with surgery being the predominant treatment method.

Genetic and geographical delineation of zoonotic vector-borne helminths of canids

Younes Laidoudi et al.

Summary: This study examined 546 cox1 and 280 12S rRNA sequences using a combined bioinformatic approach. A total of 89 different haplotypes were identified for 14 VBHs. The study found that this approach could be useful for studying the genetic diversity and phylogeography of VBHs. However, further research is needed to confirm the haplotype delineation by studying other nuclear loci.

Global Climate Change and Human Dirofilariasis in Russia

Anatoly V. Kondrashin et al.

Summary: Human dirofilariasis, a vector-borne helminth disease caused by two species of Dirofilaria, has shown a notable increase in Russia since the late 1980s-early 1990s, possibly due to the global climate warming trend during that period. It has become an emerging public health problem in Russia, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive epidemiological monitoring system.

What Has Happened to Heartworm Disease in Europe in the Last 10 Years?

Rodrigo Morchon et al.

Summary: This review provides an update on the epidemiological situation of heartworm disease in Europe and analyzes the factors contributing to its continuous spread. The disease has extended to Eastern European countries and the prevalence continues to increase in southern countries where it was traditionally endemic. Factors such as climate changes, presence of new vectors, movement of pets from endemic countries, urbanization of rural areas, and expansion of irrigated crops have influenced the distribution trends and changes in this disease.

Antiparasitics in Animal Health: Quo Vadis?

Paul M. Selzer et al.

Summary: Antiparasitics acting on endo- or ectoparasites represent the second largest segment of the global animal health market, but few novel antiparasitic agents have been introduced in recent years. To address resistance issues, there is a clear need for novel antiparasitics with new modes/mechanisms of action.

Different epidemiological pattern of canine dirofilariosis in two neighboring countries in Central Europe-the Czech Republic and Slovakia

Martina Miterpakova et al.

Summary: The epidemiological situation of canine dirofilariosis varies significantly between neighboring countries such as the Czech Republic and Slovakia. While the Czech Republic has low numbers of cases primarily attributed to D. repens, Slovakia has endemicity of both Dirofilaria species. This difference in prevalence could not be definitively explained by the study, but it highlights the varying distribution of the parasite within the region.

Infection with Dirofilaria immitis and Other Infections in Cats and Dogs from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: The Need for Prophylactic Enforcement

Flavya Mendes-de-Almeida et al.

Summary: Through testing dogs and cats in the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro, the prevalence of heartworm disease was found to be 7% among dogs and 0.9% among cats, with FIV and FeLV prevalence at 4.3% and 11.9% respectively. The seroprevalence of Ehrlichia spp. and Anaplasma spp. among dogs was at 27.1% and 9.8%. It is recommended that prophylactic measures be encouraged by small animal practitioners due to the circulation of such infections among pets.

Dirofilaria spp. and Angiostrongylus vasorum: Current Risk of Spreading in Central and Northern Europe

Hans-Peter Fuehrer et al.

Summary: The relevance of Dirofilaria and Angiostrongylus parasites in causing diseases in dogs and cats has been increasing in Central and Northern Europe. Factors such as housing conditions, pet movements, vector spread, and climate change play important roles in their spread. Further monitoring and research are needed for both Dirofilaria spp. and A. vasorum in Europe.

Heartworm disease-Overview, intervention, and industry perspective

Sandra Noack et al.

Summary: Heartworm, also known as Dirofilaria immitis, is a major parasitic threat for dogs and cats globally, especially in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. Despite the availability of preventive products containing macrocyclic lactones, compliance issues and drug-resistant heartworms in certain populations can lead to treatment failures.
