Is preoperative parathyroid localization necessary for tertiary hyperparathyroidism?

Rongzhi Wang et al.

Summary: This retrospective study examines the necessity of preoperative parathyroid localization in patients with tertiary hyperparathyroidism (tHPT) undergoing parathyroidectomy. The results suggest that preoperative localization may not be necessary for achieving satisfactory surgical outcomes and recovery in most cases.

Germline Mutations Related to Primary Hyperparathyroidism Identified by Next-Generation Sequencing

Hye-Sun Park et al.

Summary: This study utilized next-generation sequencing (NGS) to identify genetic variants associated with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) and analyzed the characteristics of patients with positive genetic test results. The findings suggest that NGS screening could be beneficial for the diagnosis and management of PHPT.

Parathyroid Carcinoma: Incidence, Survival Analysis, and Management: A Study from the SEER Database and Insights into Future Therapeutic Perspectives

Asad Ullah et al.

Summary: Parathyroid carcinoma is a rare endocrine malignancy that mainly affects older Caucasian individuals with a slight male predominance. The majority of patients undergo surgery, with a 5-year survival rate of 84%. Factors such as tumor size, age, sex, race, metastasis, and tumor differentiation are associated with an increased risk of death.

Sporadic medullary thyroid cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis of clinico-pathological and mutational characteristics predicting recurrence

Benjamin Cosway et al.

Summary: A systematic review and meta-analysis found that recurrent disease in sporadic medullary thyroid cancer is associated with T3 and T4 disease, AJCC stage III and IV disease, and the presence of nodal disease. However, due to the heterogeneous reporting and lack of individual patient data, further collaboration is needed to establish standardized definitions of disease recurrence.

Normocalcemic primary hyperparathyroidism

Natalie E. Cusano et al.

Summary: Normocalcemic primary hyperparathyroidism is a newer phenotype of primary hyperparathyroidism characterized by elevated PTH concentrations and normal serum calcium levels. It is increasingly being diagnosed in individuals being evaluated for nephrolithiasis or metabolic bone diseases. The natural history of this condition is still uncertain and caution should be exercised in recommending surgery.

Contemporary Evaluation and Management of Parathyroid Carcinoma

Abbey L. Fingeret

Summary: Parathyroid carcinoma is a rare malignancy with clinical symptoms similar to primary hyperparathyroidism. Diagnosis is often made postoperatively, with surgery being the only opportunity for cure. Recurrence is common and palliative treatment may be needed for symptomatic hypercalcemia.
