Reversibility controls on extreme methane clumped isotope signatures from anaerobic oxidation of methane

Jiarui Liu et al.

Summary: Microbial anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) is an effective process to reduce atmospheric methane emissions and should be considered in astrobiological settings. The measurement of clumped methane isotopes has proved useful in tracing methane formation and oxidation processes. This study reports high clumped isotope compositions of residual methane in AOM-active microbial incubations and highlights the role of reversibility in controlling methane isotopologue ratios affected by microbial production and oxidation.

Experimental determination of hydrogen isotope exchange rates between methane and water under hydrothermal conditions

Andrew C. Turner et al.

Summary: The hydrogen isotopic composition of methane can serve as an indicator of gas origins. This study presents experimental constraints on the kinetics of hydrogen isotope exchange between methane and supercritical water, showing that exchange rates vary with temperature and suggesting the influence of life activity and thermogenic natural gas systems. The findings have implications for understanding the signatures of methane and water on Earth and other planetary bodies.

Clumped methane isotopologue-based temperature estimates for sources of methane in marine gas hydrates and associated vent gases

Ellen Lalk et al.

Summary: This study investigates submarine gas hydrate deposits from different regions of the world's oceans using isotope analysis, providing insights into the source and generation depth of methane. The findings suggest that the isotopic composition of methane can provide information about microbial and thermogenic sources, and the apparent temperature can be used to infer the depth of methane generation.

The evolution of intra- and inter-molecular isotope equilibria in natural gases with thermal maturation

Hao Xie et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of multiply substituted isotopologues of methane to distinguish between different chemical mechanisms in catagenesis and to characterize the extent of thermal maturation of thermogenic natural gases. The stable isotope compositions of thermogenic gas samples from globally distributed locations are analyzed, showing different isotopic signatures at various thermal maturity stages. The inter- and intramolecular hydrogen isotope structures of thermogenic natural gas components transition from chemical-kinetic control at low thermal maturities toward thermodynamic control at higher maturities.

High temperature generation and equilibration of methane in terrestrial geothermal systems: Evidence from clumped isotopologues

Patrick Beaudry et al.

Summary: Research suggests that methane from geothermal areas can originate from thermal cracking of organic matter or have an abiotic origin, with geological features and fluid residence times influencing the isotopic equilibrium distribution of methane. Geothermal fields in Iceland exhibit higher temperatures and shorter fluid residence times, while Nisyros shows longer fluid residence times and equilibrium isotopic distributions.
