Kinetic isotope effect and reaction pathways of thermogenic propane generation at early maturation stage: Insights from position-specific carbon isotope distribution

Peng Liu et al.

Summary: An intramolecular isotopic study was conducted on natural gases from the Turpan-Hami Basin of China. The study found that the natural gas samples had larger 813C values at the terminal position compared with the central position of propane. This difference can be attributed to distinct reaction pathways during the thermal cracking of kerogen, which significantly influence the position-specific carbon isotope distribution in thermogenic propane. The research provides new insights into the generation mechanism of natural gas at the atomic level.

Validity of geochemical signatures of abiotic hydrocarbon gases on Earth

Xinyu Xia et al.

Summary: This paper provides biotic interpretations of hydrocarbon gases with atypical compositions, suggesting that these gases were formed through microbial processes such as methane oxidation and methanogenesis, as well as other biotic processes like hydrocarbon generation using serpentinization-derived hydrogen. Case studies show that previously proposed abiotic hydrocarbon gases were actually formed by various biotic processes, and the occurrence of abiotic hydrocarbon gas with decisive evidence is limited to fluid inclusions in some mantle minerals.

Position-specific carbon isotopic composition of thermogenic propane: Insights from pyrolysis experiments

Lin Zhang et al.

Summary: Position-specific isotope analysis (PSIA) provides novel insights into the formation mechanisms and thermal maturity of natural gas. The formation of propane can be divided into three stages, with different characteristics of propane's position-specific δ13C values in each stage. The site-preference (SP) value of propane can be used to determine its formation mechanism and maturity.

Predicting isotopologue abundances in the products of organic catagenesis with a kinetic Monte-Carlo model

Hao Xie et al.

Summary: This study develops a kinetic Monte-Carlo (kMC) model to simulate the thermal cracking process in petroleum formation and explore its relationship with other chemical reactions. The results show that the radical mechanism of thermal cracking is more consistent with natural hydrocarbon formation and can explain some existing observations. However, alternative mechanisms may influence the process in high-thermal-maturity catagenesis.

Natural gas of radiolytic origin: An overlooked component of shale gas

Maria Naumenko-Dezes et al.

Summary: This article presents a study that reveals a previously overlooked source of natural gas in shale formations, which is generated by radiolysis of organic matter. The study shows that radiolytic gas can account for a significant portion of natural gas mixtures in major shale gas plays worldwide. Considering radiolytic gas as an additional component in uranium-bearing shale gas formations can lead to a more accurate determination of the origins of natural gas.

Low 13C-13C abundances in abiotic ethane

Koudai Taguchi et al.

Summary: Distinguishing between biotic and abiotic compounds is crucial in resource geology, biogeochemistry, and the search for extraterrestrial life. The recent development of clumped-isotope analysis allows for a more accurate discrimination of the origin of organic molecules, providing important progress in understanding organic molecules on Earth and in extraterrestrial environments.

Formation of ethane and propane via abiotic reductive conversion of acetic acid in hydrothermal sediments

Min Song et al.

Summary: This study reveals an abiotic formation pathway for nonmethane hydrocarbons in hydrothermally heated sediments. The unusual isotope patterns observed in this study are hypothesized to result from abiotic reductive conversion of volatile fatty acids, which were isotopically enriched. Experiments further demonstrated the incorporation of C-13 from labeled substrates into ethane and propane.

Kinetics of propane cracking and position-specific isotope fractionation: Insights into the origins of natural gases

Xiaoqiang Li et al.

Summary: Position-specific isotope analysis of propane provides valuable information on the origin and history of natural gases. Experimental studies on propane pyrolysis revealed significant carbon and hydrogen isotope fractionation, with unique values at central and terminal positions. The kinetic parameters obtained can help understand the cracking of propane and its implications for natural gas exploration.
