Tourmaline chemistry, boron, and strontium isotope systematics trace multiple melt-fluid-rock interaction stages in deeply subducted continental crust

Xin Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, the authors investigate the generation and transport of melts/fluids derived from deeply subducted continental slabs using the variations in major, trace-element, and B-Sr isotopes of tourmaline in migmatite. They classify tourmaline into four generations and identify the key processes involved in metamorphic dehydration and partial melting of the slab. The findings suggest that tourmaline can serve as a useful tracer of melt/fluid-rock interactions and boron cycling in continental subduction zones.

Boron and Molybdenum Isotope Evidence for Source-Controlled Compositional Diversity of Cenozoic Granites in the Eastern Tethyan Himalaya

Jing-Jing Fan et al.

Summary: A systematic study of Cenozoic granites from the Yardoi area in the eastern Tethyan Himalaya, China reveals two groups: mid-Eocene porphyritic two-mica granites with low SiO2 contents and adakitic geochemical signatures, and mid-Eocene to Miocene equigranular granites with high SiO2 contents. The two groups have different sources, with the low-SiO2 granites derived from partial melting of metamafic rocks at thickened lower crustal conditions, and the high-SiO2 granites generated by partial melting of mid-crust metasedimentary rocks.

Modes of occurrence of lithium in black shale in the Nandan area, Guangxi, SW China: Implications for clay-type resources

Haonan Zhao et al.

Summary: Lithium is currently mainly sourced from ore and salt lakes, but the rapid development of electric vehicles is increasing the demand for lithium. The marine black shale in the northern Guangxi area of China has a high lithium content of up to 1000 ppm. The study reveals that illite is the main carrier mineral of lithium in the shale, and the lithium-rich shale was formed under anoxic depositional conditions. These findings provide important reference material for understanding the enrichment mechanisms of lithium in surface environments.

Geologic scenario from granitic sheet to Li-rich pegmatite uncovered by Scientific Drilling at the Jiajika lithium deposit in eastern Tibetan Plateau

Zhiqin Xu et al.

Summary: The Jiajika pegmatite-type lithium deposit in the southeastern Songpan-Ganze terrane of the eastern Tibetan Plateau is the largest hard-rock lithium deposit in China. The deposit is formed through high-degree fractionation of parent granite magma and strong fluid immiscibility, with two-stage magmatic-hydrothermal events. The S-type granite related to the deposit is emplaced as multi-layer domal sheets and surrounded by pegmatites and meta-sedimentary rocks.

Geochemical and Sr-Nd-Li isotopic constraints on the genesis of the Jiajika Li-rich pegmatites, eastern Tibetan Plateau: implications for Li mineralization

Hui Zhao et al.

Summary: By examining the trace elements and isotopes of Jiajika Li-rich pegmatites and Majingzi granite pluton in eastern Tibetan plateau, the study explores the origin and lithium mineralization mechanism of pegmatites. The results show significant differences in chemical characteristics between Jiajika Li-rich pegmatites and Majingzi granite, suggesting that the pegmatites may have originated from muscovite-dehydration melting of a mixed source dominated by Li-rich claystones and subordinate Xikang Group metapelites. The presence of Li-rich claystone interlayers in the source is crucial for spodumene mineralization in the pegmatites.

Equilibrium boron isotope fractionation during serpentinization and applications in understanding subduction zone processes

Yin-Chuan Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the boron isotope fractionation between minerals and aqueous fluids, revealing the order of boron enrichment in minerals and the limited fractionation between minerals formed during subduction and fluids released from subducted crustal lithologies. The findings provide insights into boron sources and pathways in subduction zones and the recycling of trace phases in the deep mantle and ocean island basalts.

The partitioning behavior of Mo during magmatic fluid exsolution and its implications for Mo mineralization

Panlao Zhao et al.

Summary: Most global Mo resources are derived from porphyry-type ore deposits, but data on the extraction efficiency of Mo is inconsistent. This study determines the partition coefficient of Mo between aqueous fluids and granitic melts, showing that it increases with total Cl concentration in the magmatic fluid. The observed partitioning data suggests that Mo exists dominantly as (Na,K,H)MoO3Cl in the aqueous fluid. Additionally, delayed fluid saturation and high initial magmatic Cl concentration favor Mo extraction efficiency.

Boron coordination and B/Si ordering controls over equilibrium boron isotope fractionation among minerals, melts, and fluids

Yin-Chuan Li et al.

Summary: This study proposes models for the BO3 and BO4 units in silicate melts and investigates boron isotope fractionation among silicate melt, minerals, and fluids. It finds that the proportion of trigonal/tetrahedral coordinated boron and B/Si ordering in silicate tetrahedral layers determine boron isotope fractionation among different phases, with temperature also playing a role. The study supports the use of white mica-tourmaline geothermometers and boron isotopes for fluid source identification, providing insight into boron isotope fractionation in systems containing complex silicate melts.

Nature of the mineralizing fluids in the Balda and Motiya W-prospects, western India: Constraints from chemical and B-isotope composition of tourmaline

Urmi Ghosh et al.

Summary: The study in western India's Proterozoic tungsten belts of Balda and Motiya reveals that the tungsten mineralization process may involve hydrothermal fluid derived from granites rich in Li, Mn, Zn, and Sn, indicating an important role of biotite dissolution and fluid-rock interaction. The chemistry and B-isotope composition of tourmalines suggest that the W-bearing hydrothermal fluid interacted with nearby pelitic rocks during the precipitation of wolframite and tourmaline.
