Thickness-Dependent Cross-Plane Thermal Conductivity Measurements of Exfoliated Hexagonal Boron Nitride

Gabriel R. Jaffe et al.

Summary: We measure the cross-plane thermal conductivity of hBN flakes exfoliated from bulk crystals and find that submicrometer thick flakes exhibit high thermal conductivities exceeding previously reported bulk values by more than 60%. We also find that introducing planar twist interfaces limits the maximum phonon mean free paths and decreases the cross-plane thermal conductivity of the stack.

Machine learning insight into h-BN growth on Pt(111) from atomic states

Kangmo Yeo et al.

Summary: The growth of monolayer h-BN on Pt(111) from boron and nitrogen atoms was studied using molecular dynamics with machine-learning potentials trained using first-principles data. A Y-shaped node formed around boron during the growth process, which then transformed into a quadrangular ring and eventually the hexagonal ring structure of h-BN. Pt atoms emerged from the substrate and contributed to the fusion of BN clusters. Increasing the number of deposited nitrogen atoms and cooling the substrate improved the quality of the formed h-BN. This study suggests that high-quality h-BN on Pt(111) forms through a combination of surface-mediated growth and boron precipitation due to cooling.

Tailoring the optoelectronic properties and dielectric profiles of few-layer S-doped MoO3 and O-doped MoS2 nanosheets: a first-principles study

Masoud Shahrokhi et al.

Summary: By using density functional theory, the opto-electronic properties and high frequency dielectric constant profiles of few layer MoO3-xSx/MoS2 heterostructures have been investigated. It is found that the electronic band gap decreases and the dielectric constant increases with increasing S concentration in FL MoO3-xSx. The band gap reduction is more significant when S atoms are located in the internal bulk region, and the conduction and valence band levels shift to higher energy at the edge location.

Functionalizations of boron nitride nanostructures

YaLei Bai et al.

Summary: BN nanomaterials have high thermal stability and corrosion resistance, but lack semiconductive functionality. By coupling multiple physical fields, the electronic properties of BN nanostructures can be modified, resulting in narrowed bandgaps and even magnetism. Utilizing inherent BN polarity to form electrically polarized interfaces enables controlled electronic properties and high carrier mobility in BN nanostructures.

Summary: The research on silicon-doped bilayer graphene (Si-BLG) reveals that the silicon concentration significantly affects its mechanical, thermal, and optical properties. Low silicon concentration leads to strong mechanical response and a small bandgap, while high silicon concentration results in enhanced Young's modulus and a larger bandgap.

Effect of uniaxial strain on structural, electronic and optical properties of Sr2RuO4-xFx: A DFT study

Meryem Ziati et al.

Summary: The effects of fluorine substitution and uniaxial strain on the structural, electronic, and optical properties of the superconductor Sr2RuO4 were investigated. Fluorine substitution was found to open the band gap and results in an indirect semiconductor material Sr2RuO4-xFx. The electronic properties of Sr2RuO2F2 can be tuned under external pressure, and the absorption ability is improved as well.

Adjustable electro-optical properties of novel graphene-like SiC2 via strain engineering

Huabing Shu

Summary: Mixing silicon and carbon to form graphene-like silicon carbide SiC2 provides a novel way to open a desirable gap in semimetallic silicene and graphene. The pristine SiC2 exhibits strong dynamical stabilities and behaves as a direct semiconductor with a moderate gap that can be modulated by biaxial strain. SiC2 shows superior optical absorption for near-infrared and visible light, with a large exciton binding energy, and can have optical absorption peaks significantly red-shifted under applied biaxial strain. These findings suggest great potential for nanoelectronics and optoelectronics applications.

DFT study of Se and Te doped SrTiO3 for enhanced visible-light driven phtocatalytic hydrogen production

H. Bentour et al.

Summary: The study showed that doping with Se and Te can significantly enhance the visible light activity of SrTiO3 for photocatalytic water splitting, reducing the band gap and suppressing recombination of electron-hole pairs. The calculated band edges for doped systems meet the water-splitting requirements, suggesting an enhanced performance for hydrogen generation.
