Strain-Insensitive Simultaneous Measurements of Torsion and Temperature Using Long-Period Fiber Grating Inscribed on Twisted Double-Clad Fiber

Jonatan Martino Windi Saputro et al.

Summary: This study presents an optical fiber sensor that can simultaneously measure torsion and temperature using a CO2 laser to inscribe a long-period fiber grating (LPFG) on a twisted double-clad fiber (DCF). The LPFG on twisted DCF, called twisted double-clad LPFG (TDC-LPFG), has multiple resonance dips that can be used as sensor indicators for torsion and temperature measurement. The linear and independent responses of the sensor to torsion and temperature allow for the discrimination of the two variables.

Sagnac mirror loop with two polarization maintaining fibers for twist measurement by tracking adjacent dips with tunable measurement range

Ping-Sheng Xue et al.

Summary: The transmission characteristics of the Sagnac fiber loop interferometer, which consists of two sections of polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF) spliced at different offset angles, have been analyzed. An application for twist measurement using PMFs spliced at different offset angles has been designed based on the simulation results. By changing the offset angle of the PMFs, the measurement range and sensitivity can be adjusted, and the sensitivity of the system has been improved.

Direction-Discriminating torsion sensor based on optical fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer

Guolu Yin et al.

Summary: In this research, an intensity-modulated and direction-recognizing torsion sensor based on a sandwich structure of two mode fiber is proposed. By utilizing the antisymmetric phase of the fiber mode, the sensor operates like Marius' law. The torsion direction can be distinguished by the asymmetric transmission spectrum, where peaks and troughs interchange. The sensor achieves a torsion sensitivity of 364%/(rad/cm) with a measurement accuracy of ±0.22 rad/m.

The Fabrication of an Eccentric Three-Core Fiber and Its Application as a Twist Sensor

Pingsheng Xue et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the fabrication and application of an eccentric three-core fiber (3CF) for twist sensing. The fiber was capable of measuring wide-range twist with high sensitivity by tracking lower dips of the spectral envelopes. The low cost and suitability for practical applications make this mass-produced fiber suitable for twist sensing.
