Bioinspired multichannel colorful encryption through kirigami activating grating

Xiaoyu Hou et al.

Summary: Optical encryption, which uses the degrees of freedom of light as parameters to encode and decode information, is crucial in our daily lives. Responsive structural color materials are ideal candidates for optical encryption as they can provide real-time visible feedback to external stimuli. However, the development of existing materials is hindered by poor repeatability and long feedback time. In this study, inspired by the structural color variation in animals, a multichannel information encryption strategy was developed using a two-dimensional deformable kirigami. The strategy utilizes topological space deformation to guide the change of optical property, offering new possibilities for spatial and spectral encryption, mechano-sensing, and camouflage.

Machine Learning-Enabled Inverse Design of Radiative Cooling Film with On-Demand Transmissive Color

Qiangshun Guan et al.

Summary: Passive radiative cooling is an efficient and eco-friendly method to cool objects by dissipating heat to outer space. Colored radiative cooling (CRC) has gained attention for its advantages over conventional cooling methods, but existing CRC films are opaque and generate waste heat. In this study, a transmissive CRC film is proposed, consisting of a solar transparent selective emitter and a nanocavity-based color filter, allowing light transmission and vivid colors. A mixed-integer memetic algorithm is used to optimize the top emitter for subambient cooling and sunlight penetration, while a tandem neural network is employed to determine the bottom nanocavity structure for on-demand color generation. This methodology has the potential to broaden the applications of passive radiative coolers in energy-efficient buildings, power-generating windows, and sustainable greenhouses.

To realize a variety of structural color adjustments via lossy-dielectric-based Fabry-Perot cavity structure

Md Abdur Rahman et al.

Summary: Structural colors with tunable properties have wide applications in surface decoration, arts, absorbers, and optical filters. Planar structures, particularly metal-insulator-metal-based structures, offer advantages in terms of easy manufacturability. However, the use of metallic layers in these structures can lead to degradation. To overcome this issue, a lossy dielectric layer is proposed as a solution to ensure the durability of the structure. Experimental data and simulations demonstrate the generation of vivid colors and strong light absorption using the CrON/Si3N4/Metal structures, which combine the interference effect of the Fabry-Perot cavity structure with the absorption rate in the CrO x N1-x layer.
