Vacuum-sealed silicon photonic MEMS tunable ring resonator with an independent control over coupling and phase

Pierre Edinger et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates an add-drop ring resonator with independent tuning of round-trip phase and coupling using low-power microelectromechanical (MEMS) actuation. The phase shifters can tune the resonance wavelength by 0.15 nm, while the tunable couplers can adjust the optical resonance extinction ratio from 0 to 30 dB. The MEMS rings are individually vacuum-sealed on wafer scale, providing reliable and long-term protection from the environment. Mechanical actuators were cycled for more than 4 x 10^9 cycles at 100 kHz without degradation in their response curves, and a modulation increase of up to 15 dB was demonstrated with a voltage bias of 4 V and a peak drive amplitude as low as 20 mV.

Ultra-low-energy programmable non-volatile silicon photonics based on phase-change materials with graphene heaters

Zhuoran Fang et al.

Summary: Researchers have demonstrated a non-volatile electrically reconfigurable silicon photonic platform that utilizes a monolayer graphene heater for high energy efficiency. The graphene-assisted photonic switches showed endurance of over 1,000 cycles and at least a 20-fold reduction in switching energy compared with the state of the art. This study shows that graphene is a reliable and energy-efficient heater compatible with dielectric platforms for technologically relevant non-volatile programmable silicon photonics.

Opportunities and Challenges for Large-Scale Phase-Change Material Integrated Electro-Photonics

Rui Chen et al.

Summary: Programmable photonics have the potential to transform various emerging applications, but there are challenges in achieving high energy efficiency and large-scale systems. Recent research on nonvolatile phase-change materials (PCMs) provides an opportunity for truly programmable photonics, allowing for energy-efficient and large-scale integrated photonics. Energy efficiency is more critical than operating speed for programmable photonics, and PCM is an ideal candidate. Using wide bandgap PCMs also presents exciting opportunities for various applications.

Silicon photonic microelectromechanical systems add-drop ring resonator in a foundry process

Hamed Sattari et al.

Summary: Photonic add-drop filters are crucial for implementing WDM in fiber-optic communication systems. Recent progress in photonic integration has shown the potential to integrate these filters alongside high-performance building blocks, enabling compact and complex photonic-integrated circuits. However, existing approaches suffer from issues such as high power consumption and optical losses. This study presents a compact add-drop filter based on a MEMS-actuated ring resonator, which offers low power consumption and a small footprint, making it suitable for very-large-scale integration in photonic circuits.

Silicon photonic microelectromechanical phase shifters for scalable programmable photonics

Pierre Edinger et al.

Summary: Programmable photonic integrated circuits are gaining attention for various applications, but scalability is limited by the lack of low-power and low-loss phase shifters. The demonstration of a compact phase shifter with low-power photonic MEMS actuation on a silicon photonics foundry platform addresses this challenge and paves the way for scalable programmable photonic integrated circuits.

Photo-Induced Thermo-Optical Refraction Switching by a Graphene-Assisted Silicon Microring Resonator

Zhen-Wei Li et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the in-plane photo-induced thermooptical refraction switching using a silicon all-pass microring resonator assisted by graphene, achieving high modulation efficiency and extinction ratio contrast. By combining the large electrical conductivity of graphene with the nearly critical coupling of APMRR, the device exhibits fast switching performance and shows great potential for totally planar photonic integrated circuits.
