Summary: In wireless communication systems, multibeam and multimode techniques are used to increase spatial channels and enhance channel capacity. However, previous methods could not achieve independent controls of orbital angular momentum (OAM) states in both space division and mode division multiplexing simultaneously. This study demonstrates a multilayer transmissive digital coding metasurface with a single emitting source for quadOAM beam generation with dual mode. This scheme provides a simple way to multiplexing, multichannel, and multiplatform communication and imaging systems.

Summary: Unlike other methods that only modify the phase of cross-polarization components, this paper presents a novel concept for multifunctional manipulation of a metasurface through full-phase modulation. This method allows for simultaneous and independent amplitude and phase control of both co- and cross-polarization components of circularly polarized waves. Experimental results at 980nm wavelength demonstrate the feasibility of this complex amplitude control method for circularly polarized light (left or right circularly polarized).

Summary: Multifunctional coding metasurfaces are a current research focus in highly integrated terahertz modulators. This study proposed a tunable chiral metasurface based on a Dirac semimetal (DSM) and demonstrated its multifunctional application in the terahertz region through coding. The chiral metasurface exhibited strong chirality and circular dichroism (CD) of up to 0.72 at 2.31 THz. By combining with the Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phase, the metasurface enabled wideband switchable terahertz vortex beam generation, arbitrary angular deflection tuning, and multi-beam splitting. Switchable near-field imaging applications were also developed. The results have promising applications in terahertz high-data-capacity communication systems, multi-target information transmission, and controlled near-field imaging.

Summary: Reflection- and transmission-type metasurfaces have great potentials in wireless communications. In this study, we propose an absorption-transmission-type multifunctional coding metasurface composed of an absorptive layer and a transmissive layer. This coding metasurface can independently perform three different functions for incident waves at different frequencies and polarizations: wave absorption, vortex-wave generation, and beam deflection. Numerical and experimental results demonstrate the excellent performance of low-frequency absorptions and high-frequency dual-polarization transmissions. This work provides a method for developing multifunctional and reconfigurable components for wireless communications in the future.
