Real-time layer height estimation during multi-layer directed energy deposition using domain adaptive neural networks

Liu Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, a real-time layer height estimation technique is developed for laser direct energy deposition (DED) using a laser line scanner, vision camera, and domain adaptive neural networks (DaNN). The technique is able to efficiently estimate the layer height during corner deposition based on the multi-layer straight-line deposition data and the initial model constructed. The proposed technique has been validated by DED experiments, showing an average accuracy of 25.7 μm with a speed of 0.018 s for layer height estimation at corners with different angles.

Real-time porosity reduction during metal directed energy deposition using a pulse laser

Hoon Sohn et al.

Summary: This study developed a real-time technique for reducing porosity in additive manufacturing by incorporating a pulse laser into a laser metal powder directed energy deposition (DED) system. The technique achieves porosity reduction by inducing accelerated and turbulent Marangoni flow, ultrasonic waves, and shock waves into the melt pool. It offers the advantages of noncontact, nondestructive, and real-time porosity reduction at the melt pool level without altering the geometry and grain structure of the printed samples.

A thermodynamic framework for additive manufacturing, using amorphous polymers, capable of predicting residual stress, warpage and shrinkage

P. Sreejith et al.

Summary: A thermodynamic framework has been developed to predict residual stresses and warping in a class of amorphous polymers used in FDM. The distribution of residual stresses is influenced by shrinkage during cooling, which is incorporated by introducing isotropic shrinkage. The solidification process of the melt is simulated by significantly increasing viscosity.

Summary: The directed energy deposition (DED) process is widely used in the additive manufacturing industry due to its advantages in rapid production of complex metallic parts and efficient cladding. A computational fluid dynamics model is proposed in this study to simulate melt pool generation and clad formation, evaluating the effect of surface active element-sulfur content on melt pool dynamics. Investigations on thermal evolutions of melt pool and solidification of the clad are systematically conducted to ensure accuracy and reliability of the proposed model.
