Promoting the densification and grain refinement with assistance of static magnetic field in laser powder bed fusion

Dafan Du et al.

Summary: Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) technology is widely used in the manufacturing of metallic parts, but the high porosity and rough texture of the fabricated parts have hindered its development. In this study, the use of a static magnetic field (SMF) during the fabrication process improved the density, grain size, and mechanical properties of Al-based and Ni-based alloys. Simulation results showed that the increased SMF intensity resulted in deeper depression zones and reduced lack-of-fusion defects. The tensile tests also demonstrated increased strength and elongation in the printed samples under the applied SMF.

Comparative study on the microstructure, mechanical properties and fracture mechanism of wire arc additive manufactured Inconel 718 alloy under the assistance of alternating magnetic field

Peng-cheng Huan et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of an alternating magnetic field (AMF) on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and fracture mechanism of wire arc additive manufactured Inconel 718 alloy fabricated by cold metal transfer process were investigated by changing the excitation current. The results showed that the AMF can inhibit the growth of large columnar crystals and refine the grains, leading to a significant decrease in texture index. The AMF also resulted in a reduction in the average grain size and volume fraction of Laves phases, as well as a change in their morphology. Additionally, the AMF increased the ultimate tensile strength and decreased the anisotropy of the material.
