Laser-Induced graphene electrodes for highly sensitive detection of DNA hybridization via consecutive cytosines (polyC)-DNA-based electrochemical biosensors

Mohamed Bahri et al.

Summary: Various carbon-based biosensors, including mechanical exfoliation, epitaxial growth, reduced graphene oxide, and chemical vapor deposition, have been investigated for sensitive and specific detection of DNA. The laser-induced graphene technique has been widely adopted as a promising approach for designing electrochemical biosensors. In this study, a poly C(15)-tailed diblock DNA probe is used to anchor to a carbonized working electrode, and a second block modified with ferrocene derivatives is used for DNA sequence recognition.

Ultrasensitive deafness gene DNA hybridization detection employing a fiber optic Mach-Zehnder interferometer: Enabled by a black phosphorus nanointerface

Lina Wang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the ultrasensitive detection of complementary DNA (cDNA) by employing a nanointerface-sensitized fiber optic biosensor. The sensor is functionalized with a nanointerface of black phosphorus (BP) to enhance the sensing performances. With this sensor, in-situ detection of cDNA at concentrations ranging from 1 pM to 1 μM is successfully realized, with a sensitivity of 0.719 nm/lgM. The sensor exhibits excellent characteristics such as simple operation, fast response, label-free measurement, and high selectivity.

Leptospirosis among Dengue-Negative Febrile Patients in Selangor, Malaysia

Shih Keng Loong et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the number of leptospirosis cases in Malaysia. A study found that 4.7% of febrile patients with dengue-like illness had leptospirosis, and 18% had positive anti-Leptospira IgM antibodies. Furthermore, one patient was found to be co-infected with leptospirosis and chikungunya virus.

Summary: The fiber-optic SPR sensor based on 2D materials is proposed for diagnosing different types of cancers by measuring the angular shift in peak power loss. The sensor shows different angular shifts and power losses for different cancerous cells compared to normal cells due to varying refractive indices. It has a low detection limit and high sensitivity, making it a promising tool for early cancer diagnosis.

Leptospirosis and Coinfection: Should We Be Concerned?

Asmalia Md-Lasim et al.

Summary: Pathogenic Leptospira, the causative agent of leptospirosis, can coexist with other pathogens, leading to multi-pathogen infection in humans. Understanding the dynamics of transmission by these pathogens is crucial, as coinfection of Leptospira with pathogenic bacteria is rarely reported and may complicate diagnosis and treatment. Metagenomic analysis could help identify the presence of leptospirosis with other bacteria, emphasizing the importance of being aware of and adequately training medical practitioners for appropriate treatment.
