A bistable light shutter based on polymer stabilized cholesteric liquid crystals

Zemin He et al.

Summary: In this paper, a bistable light shutter based on polymer stabilized cholesteric liquid crystals (PSCLCs) with negative dielectric anisotropy was fabricated. By applying electric pulses of different frequencies, the transparent and opaque states of the shutter can be switched. The effects of polymer concentration and chiral pitch on the bistable properties and transmission spectrum were also investigated. An optimized precuring formula with 3 wt% of polymerizing monomer and 5 wt% of chiral dopant was used, resulting in a light shutter with good bistability and optically shielding properties.

A cholesteric liquid crystal smart window with a low operating voltage

Seung-Won Oh et al.

Summary: A dye-doped cholesteric liquid crystal smart window with a haze-free opaque state is demonstrated. The window utilizes a random stripe pattern called the fingerprint (FP) texture as its initial state, which has a slightly higher transmittance than the twisted state but much lower than the homogeneously aligned state. Additionally, the proposed LC cell shows the lowest operating voltage among guest-host liquid crystal cells due to vertical anchoring at the surfaces.

Ferroelectric liquid-crystal modulator with large switching rotation angle for polarization-independent binary phase modulation

Esther Nabadda et al.

Summary: In this work, a ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) modulator with a large switching rotation angle close to 90 degrees is fabricated and characterized. The modulator acts as a switchable wave-plate with an in-plane rotation of the principal axis under bipolar voltage. The device behaves as a binary pi phase modulator independently of the input state of polarization in the ideal situation of half-wave retardance. Physico-chemical properties of the liquid crystalline mixture used to fabricate the FLC modulator with such a large switching angle are provided. The device optical properties are characterized, and the polarization-independent pi phase shift is demonstrated using an adapted Young's type interferometer.
