The past, present and future of photonic glasses: A review in homage to the United Nations International Year of glass 2022

Wilfried Blanc et al.

Summary: Since the 1960s, photonics has become an integral part of modern life, thanks to the invention and development of lasers. Glass, being versatile and easily fabricated, has played a crucial role in various applications related to the generation, transmission, modulation, amplification, conversion, and detection of light. This paper reviews the past, present, and future of photonic glasses in honor of the United Nations International Year of Glass 2022.

Transparent tellurite glass-ceramics for photonics applications: A comprehensive review on crystalline phases and crystallization mechanisms

Pritha Patra et al.

Summary: Transparent tellurite glass-ceramics have significant potential in the field of photonics due to their unique nanostructured crystalline phases. By doping with rare earths and controlling the heat treatment process, optical transparency can be achieved in glass-ceramics, allowing for in-depth analysis of crystalline phases, micro/nanostructure, and unique properties. However, there are still limitations in current research that need to be addressed for further improvement.

Random lasing and replica symmetry breaking in GeO2-PbO-MgO glass-ceramics doped with neodymium

Josivanir G. Camara et al.

Summary: The random lasing process and Replica Symmetry Breaking (RSB) phenomenon were investigated in Nd3+ doped lead-germanate glass-ceramics containing MgO. The study found that samples with higher crystallinity showed significant enhancement in photoluminescence, and the performance of random laser was also improved.

Optical properties of glasses and glass-ceramics for optical amplifiers, photovoltaic devices, color displays, optical limiters, and Random Lasers

Cid B. de Araujo et al.

Summary: A review of recent works on glasses and glass-ceramics with characteristics suitable for use in optical devices is presented. The study focuses on germanate and tellurite glasses doped with rare-earth ions and subjected to proper heat treatment. The enhanced performance of Nd3+-doped GeO2-PbO glasses as optical amplifiers with the addition of Al2O3 is discussed, along with the potential use of Eu3+-doped GeO2-PbO glasses with TiO2 nanoparticles as a cover layer for silicon solar cells. The characterization of Nd3+-doped TeO2-ZnO glasses as a promising medium for random lasers is demonstrated, while the B2O3-CaF2 glass-ceramics with CaF2 nanocrystals, Pr3+ ions, and silver nanoparticles are shown to exhibit enhanced energy-transfer processes, making them suitable for tunable color displays. Finally, the synthesis and spectroscopic properties of TeO2-Ba(PO3)2 glass and glass-ceramics and their application as optical limiters are discussed.

Summary: In this study, borate glass-ceramics were synthesized and optical experiments were conducted with doping to modify their properties. The enhancement of blue photoluminescence in CaF2 nanocrystals by adding silver nanoparticles was observed. The introduction of praseodymium ions showed slight enhancement in the blue absorption spectrum and a significant increase in red emission intensity.
