On Achilles Heel of some optical network designs and performance comparisons

Dao Thanh Hai

Summary: This article represents the first attempt to uncover vulnerabilities in proposals for optical network designs and performance comparisons. The current approach of using heuristic algorithms based on optimization models may lead to unreliable conclusions, as the performance in small-scale tests may not generalize to large-scale scenarios.

XPM induced crosstalk analysis in radio over fiber system with sub-plank higher-order dispersion parameters

Vishal Jain et al.

Summary: In this paper, XPM-induced crosstalk in small channel spacing wavelength division multiplexed radio over fiber system is mathematically analyzed and investigated using Schrodinger equation. It is found that XPM crosstalk exponentially increases with the increase in input frequency and fiber length, but decreases with the increase in channel spacing.

Experimental demonstration of all-optical aggregation and de-aggregation for a QPSK signal in an elastic optical network

Yu Ding et al.

Summary: The aggregation and de-aggregation between one QPSK and two BPSK signals are experimentally demonstrated using cross-phase modulation (XPM) effects and phase-sensitive amplification (PSA). The nonlinear-optical loop mirror (NOLM) allows for the extraction of the two BPSK signals without information redundancy, while maintaining the same wavelength as the input signal. Furthermore, the aggregation from two BPSK signals to one QPSK signal is also achieved. These schemes contribute to flexible optical networks and can be applied in gateway nodes between optical sub-networks.

Multi-stage adaptive equalization for all-optical-aggregated 16QAM signal

Asahi Sueyoshi et al.

Summary: A multi-stage adaptive equalizer is proposed for demodulation of an optical aggregated 16QAM signal. Successful demodulation of the 100 Gbps class 16QAM signal was achieved without an OSNR penalty, even when the input PAM4 signals to the optical aggregation were not symbol-synchronized.

Analysis of XPM induced crosstalk in radio over fiber system including the effect of higher-order dispersion parameters

Vishal Jain et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the crosstalk induced by cross phase modulation (XPM) in wavelength division multiplexed radio over fiber systems. Using the coupled equation and considering the influence of higher-order dispersion, the impact of XPM crosstalk is analyzed for the V band (40-75 GHz) and W band (75-110 GHz) with wavelength channel spacing ranging from 0.2 to 0.8 nm. The results show that the effect of XPM crosstalk exponentially increases with input frequency and fiber length, while decreasing with increasing channel spacing.

If Optical-processing-enabled Networks Come

Dao Thanh Hai

Summary: This paper presents a new architectural paradigm called optical-processing-enabled for optical networks, which leverages the optical signal processing capabilities at intermediate nodes. The past two decades have seen the maturing of optical-bypass networking, but the interference between lightpaths crossing intermediate nodes has been a fundamental limitation. With advancements in optical signal processing, the superposition of transiting lightpaths at the same optical node opens up new possibilities for redefining the optical network architecture. The paper discusses two processing techniques, optical aggregation (de-aggregation) and optical encoding (decoding), and proposes the concept of optical network design and planning 2.0 to maximize the potential benefits of optical-processing networking paradigm.

All-Optical Aggregation and De-Aggregation Between 8QAM and BPSK Signal Based on Nonlinear Effects in HNLF

Qiankun Li et al.

Summary: An all-optical aggregation and de-aggregation scheme is proposed for converting between one 8QAM signal and three BPSK signals using nonlinear effects in HNLF. The scheme utilizes SPM, XPM, FWM, and PA effects to decompose and recombine the signals, enabling connection between networks using different types of signals. The performance of the scheme is evaluated by calculating EVM and BER values before and after signal conversion.

QoS-aware protection in elastic optical networks with distance-adaptive and reconfigurable modulation formats

Dao Thanh Hai et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a novel perspective on redesigning dedicated path protection for elastic optical networks, aiming to achieve higher spectrum efficiency and exploit the characteristics of traffic traveling in fiber links to tailor the protection services to specific requirements. By leveraging fast reconfiguration capabilities and traffic differentiation, a new quality-of-service aware protection framework is proposed, which has shown significant improvement in spectral efficiency and potential for up to 20% spectral saving in optimal conditions. Incorporating protection service differentiation could further boost spectral efficiency, particularly for medium and high-load traffic conditions.
