DENTAL PATIENT-REPORTED OUTCOMES IN ENDODONTICS- A NARRATIVE REVIEW

Venkateshbabu Nagendrababu et al.

Summary: Recently, there has been a shift in oral health care settings towards assessing treatment outcomes from the patient's perspective. However, in the field of endodontology, research on treatment outcomes has mainly focused on clinician-reported outcomes (CROs) rather than dental patient-reported outcomes (dPROs). This review aims to highlight the importance of dPROs, present an overview of dPROs and dPROMs in endodontics, and emphasize the need to place the patient at the center of treatment. Key dPROs following endodontic treatment include pain, tenderness, tooth function, need for further intervention, adverse effects, and Oral Health-Related Quality of Life. It is crucial for clinicians and researchers in endodontology to prioritize patient welfare and incorporate appropriate measures to analyze dPROs.

Physicochemical and Biological Properties of AH Plus Bioceramic

Leticia Chaves de Souza et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the physicochemical and biological properties of AH Plus Bioceramic (AHPB) in comparison to AH Plus (AHP) and EndoSequence BC Sealer (BC). The results showed that AHPB presented adequate properties to be considered a good sealer, however, its high solubility may negatively impact the quality of the obturation.

Antimicrobial effectiveness of ultrasonic irrigation in root canal treatment: a systematic review of randomized clinical trials and meta-analysis

Lucas Orbolato Chalub et al.

Summary: The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine whether ultrasonic irrigation (UI) is more effective in root canal disinfection than conventional irrigation (CI). The results showed that UI had a better antimicrobial effect in both meta-analyses. The quality of evidence was moderate. In conclusion, UI is superior to CI in terms of antimicrobial efficacy in root canal disinfection.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis compared the effects of ultrasonic irrigation (UI) and conventional irrigation (CI) on postoperative pain (PP). The findings showed that UI resulted in less postoperative pain compared to CI, but there were no significant differences in the later periods. The study had moderate certainty of evidence for most bias risks.

Clinical Efficacy of Sealer-based Obturation Using Calcium Silicate Sealers: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Ji-hyung Kim et al.

Summary: This randomized controlled clinical trial compared the clinical efficacy and outcome of a sealer-based obturation technique with calcium silicate sealers and a continuous wave of condensation technique with a resin-based sealer. The study found no significant differences between the two techniques and noted that sealer extrusion and postoperative pain can negatively impact the prognosis of endodontic treatment.

Summary: The study compared the properties of different endodontic sealers, revealing similar physicochemical properties between BCH and BC, but with higher solubility, and higher cytotoxicity for AHP. Temperature affected the setting time and flow of the sealers, indicating that the choice of sealer should be based on the obturation method.

Association between pain, anxiety, and pain relief in patients receiving emergent endodontic treatment

Long-Ting Wu et al.

Summary: The study investigated 35 patients with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis receiving emergent endodontic treatment and found that expected pain relief before treatment is strongly associated with pain reduction, post-treatment relief, and post-treatment pain/anxiety. Expected pain relief also predicted the subgroups of low vs. moderate scores of post-treatment pain and anxiety.

Clinical and Radiographic Outcome of Non-Surgical Endodontic Treatment Using Calcium Silicate-Based Versus Resin-Based Sealers-A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Clinical Studies

Viresh Chopra et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of calcium silicate-based sealers and resin-based sealers on clinical and radiographic outcomes in non-surgical endodontic treatment. The results showed that there were no significant differences between the two sealers in terms of post-obturation pain levels at 24 h, but at 48 h, calcium silicate sealers demonstrated superior performance. The findings suggest that calcium silicate-based sealers have similar results to resin-based sealers and provide valuable information for future clinical trials.

Summary: The study found no significant difference in postobturation pain experience between teeth filled with AH Plus or TotalFill BC sealers 1, 3, and 7 days after obturation. Factors such as the severity of preoperative pain, pain provocation, use of sonic activation during treatment, and pulpless tooth status could influence postobturation pain.

Postoperative pain in endodontic retreatment of one visit versus multiple visits: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Gabriel Pereira Nunes et al.

Summary: The systematic review and meta-analysis found that in terms of postoperative pain after non-surgical endodontic retreatment, one-visit treatment had lower pain levels at 1 and 30 days compared to multiple visits. However, there was no significant difference in moderate and severe pain between one-visit and multiple-visit treatments. The overall certainty of evidence was considered low, and further well-conducted RCTs are needed to confirm these results.

Summary: This study found that research on postoperative pain shows some clear trends, including a positive trend for systematic reviews, studies with sample sizes <200, single-visit treatments, and clinical trials on instrumentation and adjunct treatments; and a negative trend for the use of numeric rating scales, multiple-visit treatments, medication/medicament clinical trials, and studies on pain in maxillary incisors. Factors such as longer observation periods and pulpal diagnoses do not show significant impact on research trends.
