A Bayesian model for wind farm capacity factors

David Wilkie et al.

Summary: This paper proposes applying hierarchical Bayesian techniques to predict capacity factor distributions of offshore wind energy projects, based on historical data from UK offshore wind farms. The results show significant variability in capacity factors, with newer wind farms having higher capacity factors, and the impact of capacity factor variability on cost estimates is relatively small.

Seizing Opportunity: Maintenance Optimization in Offshore Wind Farms Considering Accessibility, Production, and Crew Dispatch

Petros Papadopoulos et al.

Summary: Operations and Maintenance (O&M) in offshore wind energy are costly due to the harsh operating environment. To reduce costs, we propose an opportunistic maintenance scheduling approach that defines opportunity as crew-dispatch-based, production-based, or access-based. By formulating the problem as a mixed integer linear program and using an iterative solution algorithm, we identify an optimal maintenance schedule that significantly outperforms offshore-agnostic strategies. Extensive experiments using actual data demonstrate substantial improvements across various O&M metrics.

Analysis of Life Extension Performance Metrics for Optimal Management of Offshore Wind Assets1

Baran Yeter et al.

Summary: The main objective of this study is to develop an optimal life extension management strategy for ageing offshore wind farms. The key performance metrics for evaluating the life extension performance of offshore wind farms are investigated, and the Markowitz modern portfolio theory is applied to estimate the risk-adjusted return parameter. The study compares different metrics at different stages of life extension and discusses the strategy for different offshore wind farm sizes. The optimal allocation of offshore wind assets based on mean-variance optimization is presented for the different stages of life extension, accounting for uncertainty propagation.

A holistic risk management framework for renewable energy investments

Z. Y. I. Abba et al.

Summary: This paper reviews risk assessment and mitigation methods for renewable energy projects in developing countries, with a focus on Sub-Saharan African countries. The study found that both semi-quantitative and qualitative methods were used for risk analysis, with a focus on technical and economic risks. Additionally, a comprehensive investor risk management framework was introduced.

Future economic perspective and potential revenue of non-subsidized wind turbines in Germany

Lucas Blickwedel et al.

Summary: Fixed feed-in tariffs based on the Renewable Energy Act provide secure revenues for wind turbine operators in Germany, but federal financial support is decreasing. Uncertain future market prices may lead to stagnation in renewable energy expansion, highlighting the need to assess revenue potentials of non-subsidized wind turbines to reduce risk. The study introduces a forecasting model to generate electricity price time series for revenue estimation, focusing on long-term day-ahead prices and the influence of emission prices on the energy mix.
