Experimental investigation of the vortex-induced vibration of a circular cylinder near a flat plate

Wenlong Chen et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of a low mass ratio circular cylinder near a flat plate. The vibration of the cylinder, vortex shedding mode, and pressure fluctuation on the flat plate were studied in detail for different gap ratios and reduced velocities. A classification of vortex shedding modes based on the behaviors of the induced secondary vortex from the flat plate was proposed. The cylinder collided with the flat plate for a gap ratio of 0.1 to 0.5, while the effect of the flat plate was negligible at a gap ratio of 1.5 and completely disappeared at a gap ratio of 2.5. The vibrating cylinder significantly influenced the pressure on the flat plate, particularly below it.

Two-degree-of-freedom flow-induced vibrations of a D-section prism

Weilin Chen et al.

Summary: This paper presents a comprehensive study of flow-induced vibrations of a D-section prism at different angles of attack and reduced velocities. The responses are classified into nine different regimes based on the characteristics of vibration amplitudes and frequencies. The roles of shear layer reattachment and separation point movement in multiple responses are analyzed.

Vortex-induced vibration and hydrodynamic characteristics of a round-ended cylinder

Hongjun Zhu et al.

Summary: This paper numerically investigates the two-degree-of-freedom VIV response of a round-ended cylinder, comparing with a circular cylinder of the same mass-damping ratio. The results indicate that the development and separation of boundary layers determine the appearance of the minimum pressure coefficient, the vortex shedding mode, and the characteristic sizes of wake structure. The reattachment and second separation of boundary layers in the round-ended cylinder contribute to a much downstream final separation point as compared to the circular cylinder.

Summary: The wall-proximity effects on the triggering of vortex-induced vibrations (VIVs) of a near-wall cylinder were investigated through dimensional analyses and flume observations. The study identified different stages of vibration behaviors and examined the relationship between critical reduced velocity and gap-to-diameter ratio.

Summary: Interactions between the structural dynamics and wake of a vibrating flexible cylinder close to a wall were investigated using three-dimensional direct numerical simulation. The results showed that the vibration response varied with the reduced velocity and vibration mode, and was influenced by the wake.

Three-dimensional flow past a circular cylinder in proximity to a stationary wall

Weilin Chen et al.

Summary: In this paper, direct numerical simulations of the flow around a circular cylinder near a stationary wall are conducted at a Reynolds number of 500. The study reveals the significant influence of the proximity wall on the flow topology, with different flow regimes identified based on the fluid forces and vortex dynamics. The findings provide insights into the flow behavior and mechanics in such complex flow configurations.

Summary: This paper provides a comprehensive review of the literature on flow and heat transfer around a square cylinder with modified corners. The focus is on the impact of rounded, chamfered, recessed, and cut corners on various flow characteristics and heat transfer. The optimal corner modifications for reduced forces and enhanced heat transfer are suggested based on the analysis of available data. The research gap in the literature is identified for future investigations.

Effects of Mass and Damping on Flow-Induced Vibration of a Cylinder Interacting with the Wake of Another Cylinder at High Reduced Velocities

Md Mahbub Alam

Summary: This paper numerically investigates the flow-induced vibrations of a cylinder interacting with the wake of another cylinder, revealing that the mass ratio m* has a greater influence on the vibration amplitude ratio A/D than the damping ratio zeta. Furthermore, the mass-damping ratio m*zeta is not a unique parameter for cylinder oscillation in a wake.
