Summary: This paper presents a new formula for predicting the small-strain shear modulus (G(0)) of sandy soils with different particle characteristics. The new formula utilizes extreme void ratios (maximum void ratio e(max) and minimum void ratio emin) as indexes to account for the effects of various factors. Power-law correlations were established between the minimum and maximum small-strain shear moduli (G(0min) and G(0max)) and the extreme void ratios. The formula was validated using extensive data from resonant column, bender element, and torsional shear tests on different types of sandy soils.

Summary: A series of undrained cyclic shear tests were conducted on saturated coral sands under isotropic conditions to investigate the liquefaction behavior. The cumulative dissipated energy required for liquefaction (W-s) was found to be significantly influenced by the fines content (FC), relative density (D-r), and effective stress of consolidation (p ' 0). A unique relationship between the equivalent intergranular void ratio (e*) and W-s at p ' 0 = 100 kPa was identified. Additionally, a unified model was developed to characterize the generation of excess pore water pressure (EPWP) with the cumulative dissipated energy of fine-grained sand under isotropic consolidation conditions.

Summary: Undrained cyclic torsional shear tests and reconsolidation tests were conducted on saturated coral sand and siliceous sand to compare their undrained cyclic response and reconsolidation volumetric strain (ε(v)) characteristics. It was found that the cyclic resistance ratio of saturated coral sand increases with increasing relative density (D-r) and decreases with increasing consolidation confining pressure (p0′) under isotropic consolidation. The liquefaction resistance of saturated coral sand is higher than that of saturated siliceous sand for a given D-r and p0′. There is a correlation between ε(v) and excess pore water pressure (u(e)) of sand before liquefaction. The reconsolidation volumetric strain (ε(v)) of saturated coral sand stabilizes at an ultimate value defined by increasing maximum shear strain (γ(max)), which decreases with increasing D-r. Prediction models for ε(v) of saturated coral sand are developed based on the liquefaction level and γ(max).

Summary: This study investigates the bearing capacity and deformation behavior of a rigid strip footing on coral sand slopes using model-scale tests. The results show that geogrid reinforcement significantly improves the bearing capacity of coral sand slopes. The bearing capacity increases with the increasing edge distance and the decreasing slope height and angle.

Summary: The deformation of foundations in saturated marine coral sand induced by dynamic loading such as waves, earthquakes, tsunamis, and hurricanes is a major threat to the safety of marine engineering. This study examines the complex deformation characteristics of coral sand in the marine environment through undrained cyclic shear tests. The results reveal two deformation failure modes: plastic strain accumulation and cyclic mobility in medium-dense coral sand specimens. A novel method for characterizing the progressive development of cyclic deformation is presented, along with the discovery that the difference between cumulative plastic component and cyclic component at 5% deviator strain can distinguish between the deformation failure modes. The relationship between complex stress conditions and deformation failure modes is also established, providing new insights into the mechanics of deformation failures in saturated coral sand.

Summary: This study discusses the influence of consolidation ratio, cyclic stress ratio, and relative density on the undrained cyclic response of saturated coral sand. The test results show that two axial strain generation modes exist in saturated coral sand: cyclic mobility and plastic strain accumulation. Suitable models are selected to describe various excess pore water pressure generation patterns.

Summary: A series of model experiments were conducted to evaluate the vertical behavior of single pile in coral sand foundation under cyclic dynamic load. The effects of the amplitude of cyclic load, the static biased load, and the number of cyclic were considered. Load-settlement relationships, settlement-cyclic number relationships, pile tip, and pile side resistances were thoroughly investigated. The results showed that the load in coral sand foundation transfers to the pile tip more significantly, leading to reduced pile side resistance and increased pile tip resistance. The development of cyclic cumulative settlement is influenced by the magnitude of static biased load and cyclic amplitude, with the presence of static biased load helping to restrain cyclic cumulative settlement when the cyclic load amplitude is smaller than the static load.

Summary: Coral reefs are threatened by the complexity of marine environments and dynamic marine disasters. The liquefaction characteristics of saturated marine coral sand under dynamic loading have been studied through experiments, showing that the angle and fines contents impact the liquefaction resistance. The generation of excess pore water pressure presents three modes, and an energy-based method for predicting excess pore water pressure is established. Additionally, a correlation between equivalent skeleton void ratio and unit cyclic stress ratio is established for all cases considered.

Summary: The study investigates the influence of cyclic loading frequency on the liquefaction characteristics of saturated coral sand through undrained cyclic shear tests. The results show that increasing the cyclic loading frequency reduces the generation rate of excess pore water pressure and deformation. A unique relationship is observed between the amplitude of deviatoric strain and the excess pore water pressure ratio under the same cyclic stress path. The introduced unit cyclic stress ratio represents the liquefaction resistance, with higher frequencies leading to increased resistance.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of particle size and confining pressure on the shear characteristics of coral sand. The results show that an increase in effective confining pressure weakens the strain-softening and dilatancy of the coral sand. Particle size affects the internal friction angle and apparent cohesion of the coral sand. Coarse coral sand exhibits the highest degree of particle breakage.

Summary: This paper investigates the influence of complex cyclic loadings associated with earthquakes on the shear modulus and damping properties of saturated coral sands. It proposes a method to calculate the strain-dependent shear modulus and damping ratio and explores the cyclic stiffness degradation behavior of coral sands. The study reveals that the shear modulus reduction rate of coral sands is lower compared to siliceous sands, while the damping ratio for shear strain amplitudes between 0.01% and 0.1% is also lower.

Summary: This paper presents the development of a particle breakage model based on the modified Mohr-Coulomb model within a finite-element framework. The additional energy consumed due to particle breakage is incorporated through the modified strength-dilatancy relationship. A new particle breakage index is introduced and linked to the mobilized friction angle. The model is validated against triaxial tests and can provide reasonable predictions for soil-structure interaction problems.

Summary: The paper investigates the effects of consolidation conditions and rotation patterns of principal stress on the liquefaction susceptibility of saturated coral sand. It reveals a unique correlation between a generalized shear strain amplitude gamma(ga) and excess pore water pressure ratio r(u), proposing a simple formulation to relate the two. The research also uncovers the strong impact of consolidation conditions and cyclic loading patterns on liquefaction susceptibility and introduces a new proxy for liquefaction resistance, the generalized unit cyclic stress ratio (USRg), which shows a strong correlation with the number of cycles to failure N-f.
