A ductile tearing assessment diagram for cracked circular-hollow-section joints under reversed loadings

Tianyao Liu et al.

Summary: This paper presents a ductile tearing assessment diagram (TAD) to predict the load resistance and crack extension relationship in the stable tearing process of circular-hollow-section (CHS) joints under reversed in-plane bending. The TAD is constructed using the load-deformation curve envelope from fracture tests and relates fracture resistance, load resistance, and crack extension. Experimental tests on CHS X-joints made of Q345 steel validate the proposed approach, revealing the influence of reversed loading on fracture resistance. Additionally, cyclic fracture tests on SE(T) specimens made of Q345 steel provide a TAD that successfully predicts load-crack extension relationships for joints under reversed loading.

Three-dimensional fatigue crack propagation simulation using extended finite element methods for steel grades S355 and S690 considering mean stress effects

Haohui Xin et al.

Summary: The assessment of fatigue crack propagation in steel structures is crucial for improving the application of high strength steel in construction. The study used the Walker equation to fit the fatigue crack propagation rate of steel grades S355 and S690, and developed a three-dimensional simulation subroutine which was successfully validated for both grades.

Limitations of small-scale yielding for fatigue crack growth

B. Marques et al.

Summary: The study introduces a simple criterion to define the boundaries of small-scale yielding (SSY) and large-scale yielding (LSY), impacting the validity of using Delta K as a parameter for fatigue crack growth rate. Various factors such as crack length, material yield stress, and stress conditions influence the transition between SSY and LSY, cautioning against assumptions of Delta K validity for high strength alloys.
