Centrifuge tests and numerical simulations on vertical bearing capacity of mat foundation on marine clay seabed

Qi Zhang et al.

Summary: The vertical bearing characteristics and vertical bearing capacity on sloping seabed were studied, revealing that the vertical bearing capacity is reduced and the soil experiences sliding failure. The insertion depth of pile legs has a more significant contribution to the horizontal bearing capacity compared to the vertical bearing capacity. The increase in vertical bearing capacity is mainly attributed to the dissipation of excess pore pressure and the increase in mean effective stress of the soil. Preloading, consolidation degree, and soil property significantly affect the vertical bearing capacity of the mat foundation.

Numerical investigation and design of suction caisson for on-bottom pipelines under combined V-H-M-T loading in normal consolidated clay

Tao Liu et al.

Summary: This study uses finite element numerical analysis to investigate the combined V-H-M-T bearing capacity calculation method of suction caissons used as foundations for pipeline systems in deep-water oilfields in the South China Sea. The influences of torsion on the vertical force, horizontal force, moment bearing capacity, and combined VHM bearing capacity are discussed. The results show that torsion primarily shares tangential forces around the cylinder wall, leading to a decrease in the VHM composite envelope surface of the suction caisson. This impact is quantified through regression analysis, and a design method for suction caissons under combined V-H-M-T loading in normal consolidated clay is summarized.

Undrained capacity of circular shallow foundations under combined VHMT loading

Pengpeng He et al.

Summary: This study investigates the VHMT failure envelope of circular shallow foundations under undrained soil conditions using finite element analysis and a zero-tension interface. The results show that torsional loads decrease the bearing capacity of circular foundations, while foundation embedment significantly increases the bearing capacity.

Vertical Bearing Capacity of Foundations with Large Embedment Depth in Normally Consolidated Clay

Mengxi Tan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the vertical bearing capacity of strip, circular, and conical foundations within a large embedment depth range in normally consolidated clay. Parametric studies were conducted to analyze the effect of soil nonhomogeneity and foundation-soil interface roughness. The results show that there is no critical value for the vertical bearing capacity even at large embedment depths, and the soil nonhomogeneity and friction coefficient have significant influences on the foundation bearing capacity.

Estimation of horizontal bearing capacity of mat foundation on structured and over-consolidated clays under cyclic wave loads

Chengjin Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the behavior of a mat foundation on a clay seabed under cyclic wave loads and presents the weakening effect on bearing capacity. Results indicate that the degrees of weakening effects of the normalized horizontal bearing capacity decrease with the increase of the degree of clays structure and OCR value. The clay's structure is not easily damaged under the action of cyclic wave loads, while the clay's over-consolidation state can be easily dissipated and transformed into normally consolidated clays under specific wave load frequencies.

Geotechnical Analysis of a Mat Foundation Supporting a Wellhead Platform

Shuzhao Li et al.

Summary: This research focuses on the installation behavior of mat foundations in soft soil sites, examining factors such as expected penetration depth, target center of gravity, tilt correction using ballast tanks, and settlement post-installation in order to evaluate the suitability of large-area mat foundations. Advanced simulations and lab testing were conducted to provide necessary soil parameters for analysis and gain insights into the behavior of mat foundations before and after installation.

Capacity of caissons in stiff-over-soft clay under combined V-H-M loadings

Huxi Xia et al.

Summary: This study conducted a numerical analysis on the bearing capacities of caissons in stiff-over-soft clay under combined V-H-M loadings. The research found significant differences in failure mechanisms of caissons in stiff-over-soft clay compared to uniform clay, and proposed an empirical design method to predict failure envelopes under various loading situations.
